I was looking through some engineering papers, and found this interesting diagram. It almost looks like it could be an Escort pickup.

I'm guessing this is just a weird sketch?

Not sure exactly, but I'm fairly confident it's the cousin of this thing:

I originally thought that, but the B pillar isn't correct. Also, the sketch has a transverse inline 4 cylinder.

I first thought that, but the engine is a transverse inline 4.

I thought of that, but the taillights and bumpers are wrong, not to mention the grill.

No clue...but why, if you're trying to illustrate a driveshaft to people who presumably had no clue what it was (otherwise you probably wouldn't need a figure), would you show some transverse engine AWD setup instead of a simple, traditional longitudinal one? Seems weird.

Chevy Luv? Looks like the early 80s model, perhaps.

that front end screams Opel Senator to me, but nowhere I knew of got a 4 cylinder, awd pickup variant. I think the key to figuring it out is the swept tailgate line there

The paper was discussing shear and torsion of shafts. After closer reading, I can tell the author wasn't paying attention to the figure he picked. This is the description for the figure:

"Torsionally loaded shafts are among the most commonly used structures in engineering. For instance, the drive shaft of a standard rear-wheel drive automobile , depicted in Fig. 1, serves primarily to transmit torsion."

What the AWD fudge..... I'd guess it was a K-car with a funky Mitsubishi drive line but who knows. The grill and body lines look K-Carish to me.

Haha, yeah...that reeks of "shit, I said I'd have a figure...need to find a public domain sketch fast... ah, good enough".

Point it out to the prof and get some brownie points...unless he's the author...then, um, don't.

It looks to me like an 81-84 Escort made into an AWD Ute with taillights and rear section from an EXP. It may have been a design/engineering study that never made it to production.

Pics for reference:

and the EXP:

This gives me bad ideas. Like if I were a wealthy man I would find an old EXP, build it into a little pickup with the 1.6 ecoboost/awd from under a newer escape. Then I would wonder why I built it because I couldn't fit inside with the back of the cab so upright.

The front fascia looks like Early 80s Escort/Lynx to me.

Edit

Look at the engine.

Kinja'd!!!

I think we have a Ford Escort, with some artistic license.
