Early Cummins 6BT. I know the injectors were mechanical, but was there any sort of electronic control on this engine at all? Any sort of 'short' ability for problems later on? Incredibly reliable yes, but any possible electrical faults with this one? Asking because of a writing project.

the only think electrical aside from ingetors is spark + timing. if it has a distributor, then its a purely mechanical motor AFAIK

EDIT: stupid me, I forgot its a diesel.

I wort something about spark, but I forgot you talk talking about a diesel motor. I think that reply got kinja'd

umm, honestly, i cant think of anything else that would be electrical....

Nothing electronic that I know of, unless you're talking about the later ISBs.

No. I am looking at this as a purely mechanical engine that can be impervious to any electrical anomaly. EMP, etc type of stuff. I suppose given a true nuke apocalypse, anyone in a 6bt powered manual RAM truck (Chuck Norris) would have transportation, everyone else would not.

No computers at all. The only thing that needs electric power on the engine are the glow plugs and it's relay, and starter.

You'd need Chuck Norris' arm to crank start that bitch, tho

If it's warm, with as much compression as it has, one turn will probably start it.

The high compression was what I was talking about. You need to compress it all quickly enough that it explodes. There's a reason cars left in gear don't move, and it's not cause turning over an engine is easy...

Hilux and Landcruiser owners laugh at your ignorance.

Not glow plugs- 6BT's have a grid heater, which is a little block in the intake that heats the air. Same concept, same application, just different location/operation.

Fuck. I knew that. Either way, those are electric.

They have a fuel shut-off solenoid, at least in Dodge applications. It's the only electrical bit that can prevent the engine from continuing to run.

Nothing electronic - they actually use old diesels at some radio observatories to prevent interference. Here's an article on the one in West Virginia: http://www.complex.com/sports/2014/04… . No pics in the article but they have Checker Marathon diesel wagons too.

now that is really neat. Things we never think of.
