I decided there was no point in acquiring parts and spending money on my free Craigslist moped before I knew it would run. The tank was nasty, NASTY gross, as was the carb. The fuel line was cracked and dry rotted, and there was no spark at the spark plug.

The spark was easy enough, a new plug and cleaning up the ground on the coil took care of that.

I pulled the (thankfully very simple) carb, and cleaned it thoroughly.

I took the petcock off the gas tank, plugged it up and filled it with hot soapy water to help break up the nasty oil/gas residue left in there. A couple of rounds of that, and I drained it and filled it with plain white vinegar to help get rid of the rust. Lots of moped sites swear by this method, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I checked it every day, and saw very little improvement to the naked eye. Today was a week of soaking, so I drained the tank and resigned myself to resorting to some muriatic acid. Much to my surprise, when I sprayed out the tank to flush out the vinegar, the rust just flaked right off leaving nearly pristine bare metal!

I filled the tank with gas/oil mix, ran new fuel line and kicked it over, and I'll be damned if the thing didn't fire right up!

Now I need a chain, tube and rear tire, and I can take it for a test drive! There's still several mechanical bits to be addressed, and LOTS of cosmetic work to be done, but now I feel a lot more confident in proceeding to fix it up.

A friend of mine got a weed whacker-engined scooter at about the same time as a 600cc motorcycle. The bike then proceeded to have something like 7 different failures one after the other. The scooter... ran the whole time. Absolutely perfectly, start on the first pull VOODOO. I'm pretty sure it was taunting us.
