What was the fastest American production car of 1989? Answer: The 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am TTA. You probably think that being a Trans Am, it had to have a V8, right? Well, you see, that's where you're wrong.

These monsters were fitted with the Buick 3.8L Turbocharged V6. Unfortunately it was only available with an automatic transmission and the motor was speed limited to go 162 mph and would do 0-60 in a still very respectable 4.6 seconds. So, there you have it, the only factory Turbo Trans Am equipped with a good Turbocharged engine.

I recall when that car came out, it was faster (or just as fast as) the Vette that year. I was driving a pokey 190hp 15th Anniversary T/A that needed some cosmetic attention, but at least it had 3 pedals.
