I was out on a hotwheels hunt and I saw a Subaru Outback Sedan exactly as pictured. I had no clue these were ever made in sedan form I thought the outback was only wagons. When I saw it I felt like stealing it and joining a rally. I'm pretty sure this is the only offroad sedan I've ever seen that was available from factory. what would you even call this a CUS? Cross Utility Sedan?

A friend of mine has a navy blue one. Confused the hell out of me when he first showed me his car. He apparently autocrosses it with no mods except maybe good tires

for autocrossing I imagine a legacy would be better suited. I can't see the high center of gravity helping in autocross all that much. pretty cool none the less.

That's a Legacy Outback which did indeed come as a sedan. The Forester is wagon only.

I knew what it was the moment I saw it I just had no idea it existed. must not of been a huge seller since this is the first one I've ever seen and I see outback wagons on a daily basis.

Subaru sedans always look weird.

I think they called it a SUS (sport utility Sedan)...no seriously.

Fecking awesome, is what it is.
They also did it with the next gen too.

Subaru actually called it an SUS — Sport Utility Sedan!! It was originally created after suggestions from a customer in Connecticut (no joke). I think they did 3 generations before they ditched it. Very cool spot — you only see these in the Northeast and Colorado.

I always got mad that Volvo never did an XC version of the S70, just the V70. All the same bits made for the wagon would've bolted right onto the sedan quite easily.

Outback versions were made for the second, third, and fourth generation of the Legacy sedan, with the first two generations being referred to as the Outback SUS (Sport Utility Sedan).
The first generation Outback Sedan was only sold for 2 model years, 1998 and 1999. The 1998 model was a limited test release, and was only available in New England. It saw a country wide release in 1999.
The second generation Outback Sedan was sold for all 4 years of the third generation Legacy's model run, and was the one that you saw. It was also the only way to get a 6 cylinder in a Legacy sedan.
The third generation Outback sedan was only available until 2007. The sedan was never a strong seller, and it finally fizzled out with this generation.
The Outback Sedan wasn't the only off-road capable sedan from the factory. The AMC Eagle was available as a sedan as well.

The Sport Utility Sedan needs to become a thing! I like it. If this was still available new it would be a contender for sure. This was in Edmonton Alberta is that matters at all.

The Colorado of Canada!!
They ditched it because no one was buying it, sadly. They made the Legacy sedan-only and the Outback wagon-only, and that was it.

The more you know! I had no idea you could get the eagle as a sedan either. I for one am really digging this sport utility sedan thing. These need to come back.

I see them all over the place in Bend OR, as well.

It's funny cause if I was buying I would want a Legacy wagon and a Outback sedan. Subaru needs to hire me, I think I'm on to something. The outback wagon and the Forester are too alike if you had the outback as a sedan it would really differentiate the two. And a Legacy wagon that is self explanatory.

that next gen with the H6 would be a pretty awesome ride. 10/10 would snow hoon.

They were regionally sold when new, hence the rarity in many parts of the US. As a current resident of Connecticut, I'm glad that we have at least produced one good idea. Makes up a little bit for the WWF.

Yea I live in MA and there's a few that I see around

The differences between all the Subaru models largely confuses me if I try to look into it more closely. I'm pretty sure they just make one car in a sedan or wagon trim and just change the ride height and / or body cladding a bit.

The Eagle was very versatile when it comes to body styles. There were 5 available bodies:
and a factory convertible conversion.
I had a rendering at one point for a Outback sedan based on the 2010-2014 Outback wagon, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. It's a shame, because it actually looked pretty awesome.

That eagle hatchback is something else! 10/10 would hoon
