Oppopinion / QOTD: What Car Is Only Good When It's Stock?

The main site question today is "What car is only good when it's modified?" I have a different question.

I'm not morally opposed to modifying cars. Far from it. But some cars are so good out of the box it's hard to see why the artist's interpretation makes any sense. Some cars are so good in stock format, they are not only perfectly of their own time but also hold fast today.

Example: A stock 1995 M3 is a phenomenal car. Not only was it amazing in its day, but the performance and amenities have held up well almost 20 years later. It does a lot of things really well. It handles beautifully, its engine makes nice noises (even in US-trim), and it will idle in traffic with the AC running. Will a new M3 - or even a recent M3 - outperform it? Sure. But so what?

Kinja'd!!!

So, Oppo, show me what cars you like in stock format rather than breathed on. No arguments, just looking for opinions.

Every car can be made better with modifications.

Luxo-Barges: LS, 7 series, A8, Maybach, Bentley, Rolls. They should all be kept unmodified.

I think a more accurate turn of phrase would be, "what cars came out of the factory with no glaring weaknesses," and my vote is:

Kinja'd!!!

But the first gen 6 cyl M3 is definitely a Hall of Fame car. I totally agree with you there.

Probably the only ones that fit the bill are hypercars like something from Pagani or Koenigsegg.

I would say that every regular production car has something that could be modified to suit your needs better. Even something simple like tires or brake pads.

I kind of wonder if the cars that are at the opposite end of the spectrum don't fall under an alternate rule, though. If a car is sufficiently deficient-yet-utilitarian, there aren't many things you can do to it to make it objectively better without both making a silk purse out of a sow's ear and making other aspects of the car worse. Por ejemplo:

Two cars which I prefer stock is my w211 e55. Mainly for reliability reasons - I.e piston #8 failure on the m113k v8 from "tunes". I also like E39 M5's which are unmolested. I'm OK with lowering springs, for a slight drop but anything significant makes me walk away. By stock I also mean OEM or equal parts, I.e no URO brand peasant parts. However if aftermarket parts improve reliability over stock its something I consider.

Most cars IMO look nice stock or slight tasteful upgrades- provided they are taken care of in terms of paint etc.

+1 to the E39 M5. Ever so slight drop and they are PERFECT. The same can be said for any M car, really.

There is a company in Europe that fits these with BMW flat 2 motorcycle engines. I would think that would make it better, or at least streetable.

that's not an M. If OEM is the same price as the upgrade, then upgrade. (ie. coilovers. swaybars etc...) I want it set up for my driving style, not a neutral factory setup. body kits are for posers.

Absolutely agree. The Mk1 GTi is so fun out of the box that almost anything you do to it will compromise it somehow.

I was looking to purchase an E39 m5 a few months back. However, the owner turned out to be a scam artist. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/…

I almost gave him the deposit but got saved by carproof. It had been in a bad collision and the owner did not disclose.

Here is the same car. If anyone could make a post about this, feel free. The advertisement is on Kijij in Ontario, Canada. I can provide more evidence if anyone would like. If someone would like, they can also msg the owner for the vin and see that it is the same one in my carproof.

Volkswagen Phaeton. Actually, this question really does apply to most hyperluxury cars, but the Phaeton was the only one in the price range for people who would want to modify it to be able to get a hand on it.

Rally Rolls nonwithstanding. That thing is awesome. I doubt you could do thar properly with a current Phantom, though.
