Is that screencap from The Big Sleep?

Yes it is.

I love these cars with the square headlight. Am I the only one who would keep the "'39 PLY IN TOW!" on it?

Here's a pic of a slantback two-door sedan '39 in good shape.

It'd almost be worth taking a picture of and recreating once you'd repainted it and either worn or let wear down the paint. You want it to look like it's in a dealer lot ca. 1950.

No lie, if I had about a hundred grand saved and a sabbatical year, I would go absolutely batshit loco.

That black paint on the rear pillar made it look like rot, jesus that was scary.

I think there's a strong argument for doing a streamlining thing in black paint back from the rear window into the body curve. Maybe that's what somebody did.
Oh, it's also quite possible that black paint is over a rust-damaged bondoed lead seam for the roof. It's hard to say.

But you don't. So back to work with you.

I found something here a few years older that looks like less of a project.

Nice. I do like the '39 Mopars one of the best, though - particularly the Dodge with the giant chrome trident:
I must say on any of them, the running board delete is a solid choice - makes the whole thing look more muscular - though it's more pronounced on the '38 and earlier.

Easily one of the best-looking prewar low priced cars, along with the '40 Chevy. Wonder if that missing part around the C-pillar was an aborted rust repair, or the start of an unfinished custom job?

It's not missing altogether, it's just painted black. Which could still be either a repair or the first wheeze of a custom, granted.
