It's not car related, but if the Gawker network gets taken out......

There's an army of people on Reddit emailing EVERY SINGLE ONE of Gawker's supporters pretty much saying "So are you supporting bullying? Huh? Huh? HUH?" If Gawker/Kotaku lose enough advertisers, there's a small but existent chance that they might go down. With any luck, Jalopnik/Oppo could survive independently, but who knows.

So here's all the info:

And here's one of the things that pisses me off: A Gamergate supported tweeted saying they "Got BMW to pull their advertising." Here's a copy of the email though.......

Kinja'd!!!

That just seems to indicate that they didn't advertise with Gawker, not that they stopped.

But here's the juicy one:

I don't know much about it so I don't really have an opinion on it. I just hope that the Jalopnik stuff doesn't get too majorly affected.

yea. that. Jalopnik can and will survive on its own.
We care too much to let it fail

what the hell is gamergate, the only thing I know about it, is that it involves Koaktu, which is the gaming site of Gawker Media, but thats about it.

Honestly, just look at the second article in the first group of articles. It gives a decent idea of what it is.

I don't know much about, and I personally don't care for it either. I don't care about what gender or sexual orientation of who made the game I'm playing, all that I care about is if they did a good job, making an enjoyable title. Is that hard?

What I'm reading on that reddit post is just silly. They're snitching on people just because they don't agree with what a couple writers said, not the whole network.

The more I hear about Gamergate's antics, the more I feel like they lack confidence in their position. Rather than debate in a public forum, they'd rather lie and use underhanded tactics to undermine their opposition, at best. At worst, they're straight up threatening people.

Exactly. They don't know how many lives they're inadvertently fucking up. If Gawker loses enough sponsorships, they're going to have to make pay cuts and people will lose jobs because of this, and not just the ones that they hate.

In a single paragraph, can you summarize what Gamergate is about and what it's relevance is? I'm looking for 5-10 sentences max that can clear this up for me. I'd read the articles, but something tells me you don't want me giving them the page views....

Gawker is a shit-stirrer, when did that become news?

I was going to post about this - I know that Gamergate got Intel to pull its advertising off of... Gamasutra , was it?

I only just heard about BMW pulling its ads off of Gawker Media, and Mercedes-Benz apparently did the same thing a few days prior. That certainly surprised me, though I think this will blow over and those advertisers will return.

It's gawker. More drama flares up in Gawker than all the high schools combined. (edit, add) but all the sponsors they're trying to knock off is detrimental....crazy detrimental to the entirety of Gawker.

It's the controversy between sexist comments on female devs, the fact one female dev had a relationship with a kotaku writer, the controversy of possibly biased writing because kotaku writer has had relationship with female dev, gawker bigwigs posting stupid shit on twitter, and now a bunch of Reddit trollers trying to take down gawker through destroying the sponsership deals gawker has.

The question is, will other companies fill in the shoes of the lost sponsors, or will the original ones realize they've been duped?

You don't have to give them views: Wikipedia wrote a summary!

Gamergate (sometimes referred to as GamerGate or as a hashtag #gamergate ) is a controversy in video game culture which began in August 2014. It concerns ingrained [1] issues of sexism and misogyny in the gaming community, as well as journalistic ethics in the online gaming press , particularly conflicts of interest between video game journalists and developers. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

The controversy came to wider attention due to a sustained campaign of harassment that indie game developer Zoe Quinn was subjected to after an ex-boyfriend posted numerous allegations on his blog in August 2014, including that she had a "romantic relationship" [7] with a Kotaku journalist, which prompted concerns that the relationship led to positive media coverage for her game. Although these concerns proved unfounded, [8] [a] allegations about journalistic ethics continued to clash with allegations of harassment and misogyny. [10] Other topics of debate have included perceived changes or threats to the " gamer " identity as a result of the ongoing maturation and diversification of the gaming industry. [2] [3] [4] [5]

The rising popularity of the medium, and greater emphasis on games as a potential art form , has led to a commensurate focus on social criticism within gaming media and indie works. [9] [12] [13] This shift has prompted opposition from traditional "hardcore" gamers who view games purely as a form of entertainment. [6] [9] [12] [14] This opposition, however, has often been expressed in the form of personal harassment of female figures in the industry rather than constructive cultural conversations. [10] [12] The harassment campaign against Quinn was of such ferocity as to attract significant mainstream media attention which focused on the sexist, misogynistic and trolling elements within the gamer community. Allegations of impropriety in gaming media have prompted policy changes at several outlets, and commentators generally agree that systemic problems in the gaming media need to be discussed; however, the harassment and misogyny associated with Gamergate is seen as having poisoned the well . [10] [12] [15] Furthermore, the choice to focus the campaign on a heretofore relatively obscure independent developer rather than AAA publishers has led to questions about its motivations. [14] [15]

Hate to say it, but life as usual then?

I don't mean to sound so numb to the topic, but on the scale of where things rate on the importance scale, this sounds like "ripe" news for TMZ. It's the kind of attention Gawker feeds on.

I don't agree with anything that has been said, obviously, but it's just nothing new or newsworthy to me.

I'm also not really much of a gamer at all, so it doesn't even really affect any hobby of mine to any degree...Just reminiscent of Gizmodo vs Apple when they got the iPhone from the bar....

My 2 cents: There is healthy concern for the integrity of gamer culture out there, but this has spiraled way out of control. As a gamer, I would agree with the sentiment to detach gaming and overt social commentary. On a grander scale, journalism must retain some inkling of honor (I see the irony in this statement). However, I do not think sabotage, misogyny, and threats are methods to promote your cause and incite change.

Gawker, Gawker, Gawker... Gawker is incredibly stupid. Gawker still thinks its "News Networks" can also be whiny blogs. I'm all for the existence of subblogs (Oppo, GT, etc) as outlets to share opinions and discuss relevant topics, but it can be infuriating to read an author's opinion on the FP on a subject when all you really want is the facts. Continuing to feed Gamergate is easily the worst thing they could have done, now GG threatens to ruin Gawker, banking on the network's inevitable need to blow it out of proportion.

This is a shit storm, it no longer has any meaning to me. This could have been a culture changing event, too bad both sides need to "win".

The way I figure it, things went down like this

1) Allegations of ethical impropriety regarding a game dev and a game journalist.

2) Allegations denied, little to no evidence supporting except the journo's word, which is concerning and probably worth investigating but

3) IDIOT BRIGADE ATTACKS, IDIOTS LED BY ASSHOLES AND WE ALL LOSE.

4) Everything gets hijacked. Goddammit.

5) Now it seems that the people who try and bring up rational points are attacked by either (or both!) sides for being anti-women/anti-gamers. This topic is a race to the bottom, and it's best left avoided.

It's such an effing mess, I just want to hit the reset button.

Gamergate is to gaming, as Fox News is to politics. It's pretty obvious that they're ripping from the Glenn Beck / Bill O'Reilly / Sean Hannity playbook.

Merc reinstated their campaign after doing a little research (and likely realizing that listening to misogynistic fartwaffles with double-standards on what media can do vs. what they can do is not cool): http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-inter…

Trying to paint their actions as a crusade to keep the media free from advertiser control while telling advertisers to pull their support from outlets of the media...ostensibly, to exert control over said media—yeah, that dog won't hunt.
