It just needs (maybe) a little more of a linear/rev-happy powerband. Everyone on the FP is talking about how it's disappointing. Also, BMW is now as Cadillac-y as Cadillac is BMW-ish. Have some pictures, starting with one I'd call brand decay

An F12 I spotted
Speedster in bad shape outside mechanic's. C4 is being diagnosed at the shop because I'm clueless.

It needs torque. On the low end. Badly

Having driven an FRS, it is perfectly capable. I don't see the need for more power.

Incompetent?

I have no idea how to figure out what's going on, so yeah.

I agree. It's just that people don't complain about the Miata and definitely not about the S2k, so it seems they just want a modern 4A-GE in there...

That is incompetence, as defined in a dictionary, I 'spose. Still that is an awfully negative thing to say. So to make you feel better enjoy this.

I think people forget that engine made less than 130hp.

I am a kinda negative person, but I have plenty of positive sentiments about that Camaro gif!

I know that, but I meant modern day version. Besides, the blacktop 20V made plenty of power!

A modern version would probably make around the same power as the FA20, so people would still complain.

Was that F12 in Crystal City?
Because that place annoys the hell out of me, Haha.

Yeah, basically. It was Rosslyn, which is basically driving hell for Arlington. Saw this poor E30 slammed to the ground and straight piped the other night, completely ragged out...

I agree 100% about the brz/frs; Its not that there is a lack of power, or at least not that I care but the engine was flat, dead, no fizz/pop, it did its job and hated it.

well the blacktop beams of 2.0 liters displacement made 210 hp in 1997 without direct injection, so yeah, i think its fair to hope for more.

Exactly! People seem to confuse the feeling of the engine (power delivery, voracity) and the amount of power, and when an engine falls short in either way it will result in a less enjoyable drive.

I would fall head over heals for the brz if it was more like the engines from the 90's no speed but lots of noise for 4000 rpms then HOOOLY SHIIIIIIIT!!! *shift* HOOOOOOOOLY SHIIIIIIIT *repeat*. THAT was fun. the brz is moderate speed but no thrills from idle to redline.

According to Celica forums it was only 170, but supposing there was more power out of a modern version, there would still be those that complain that it should be turbo'd for more torque or it revs to high and gets bad fuel economy. I guess it's like any other vehicle. There is always something someone will complain about.

There was a 170 hp version as well. The blacktop was making over 100 hp per liter, confirmed. I have an uncle that did some engineer analysis for Toyota on that motor in the 90's to see if it could be taught to play here. the story was yes, but not without more work that it was worth...bummer.

it was a clean motor, just not on our gas where significant changes would have been required to keep it emissions compliant wihtout sacrificing too much power.

Either way around it, still thanks to the EPA.
