Theres two R34's around portland that I've seen, one was out on I84 heading west into Portland , the second is owned by PSI and is their shop car. By the time they're legal for import I should be financially set enough to buy one.

However by the time I can afford and will be looking for a 2nd car (~1.5-2 yrs) the R34 will still be a pipedream... Nissan did offer it on the R35 as well, which might just be my next purchase (if I can shake the 911 dream)

When I got into cars in my teens, my sight was set on a 911 Carrera S. In recent years, I reckon the Cayman GTS is the proper drivers car to own, and also a fair chunk of change cheaper.

I'll have to see how the next 18-24 months of saving pans out, lucky for me the FR-S is a treat to enjoy right now. Its times like these I need to reflect on how a 25 year old shouldn't be gunning for his first high end sports car...

It does indeed. If she's anything like my better half, then she usually gets her way. Haha.

She does from time to time but actually prefers the 12C to them. However, if given the choice of all of our vehicles, she would definitely take our Range Rover or her Model S over any of them. In fact, the only sportscar that she really wants is her old E-Type convertible that she had when we were first married.

Kinja'd!!! CAcoalminer > Brian Silvestro

Kinja'd!!!1

It is. However, I still view the 458 as an odd looking catfish.

Amazing to say the least. It probably has the quickest steering that I've ever encountered and its engine feels like its inertia less. As far as road manners, it can get a bit noisy in the cabin as there isn't very much sound deadening but that does contribute to more of the exhaust filtering into the cabin. In addition, it rides surprisingly well and the interior seems much nicer than its Scuderia predecessor. In short, I intended to only spend about an hour with it and then drop it off at its owner's home but ended up keeping it all day and putting over 120 miles on it. Needless to say, I may have liked it a bit.

I had been discussing the Speciale and 991 GT3 with the owner, Steve, on Sunday and on Tuesday, he called me to say that his new Speciale had been delivered and was wondering if I wanted to try it out. I initially refused stating that he needed to enjoy his new car first and then I would consider taking it for a drive but he insisted since he would be busy all week and didn't trust the dealership to deliver it to his house for him. Sounds like a plan.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > CAcoalminer
10/26/2014 at 13:39

Kinja'd!!!0

the only tough part about it is that I will never be able to buy the GT at the bottom of its depreciation curve. Too late for that... I would need to start making more money to spend over $200K on one.

The R8 could be a really good buy in a couple years. If everyone loves the new model and it drives down the price of a low mileage V10 Manuél coupe under $100K the prices will probably stabilize at that point. I don't see the Manuél ones ever getting super cheap since both Audi and Lambo discontinued the gated shifter.

Kinja'd!!! CAcoalminer > Manuél Ferrari
10/26/2014 at 14:01

Kinja'd!!!0

True.

I think you over estimate the V10 manual. Yes, it's the last Audi sportscar to have a manual transmission, but that's really the only thing that sets it apart. When you look at modern cars that are going up in value, they usually have more than one desirable feature. Take the GT3 RS 4.0 and Ford GT. The 4.0 is limited production, the last Porsche to use the Metzger engine, and the last GT3 to have a manual transmission. The Ford GT has relatively low production numbers, can never be reproduced because of pedestrian crash standards, has a manual transmission, and is based on an automotive icon. While I do think cars with manual transmissions will command a premium over their automated siblings, I really don't see them being quite valuable if that's the only distinguishing factor.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > CAcoalminer
10/26/2014 at 14:18

Kinja'd!!!0

I agree with evertthing you said. I didn't explain myself well. I didn't mean to infer that the R8 V10 Manuél will go up in value one day like the Ford GT or GT3 RS 4.0 did. For that to happen the car does need to be special and rare.

I meant that it could at least hold its value once the value bottoms out. Which is better than nothing. Most cars will eventually depreciate until they're worth next to nothing. If a sports car can at least retain some value then you don't lose as much if you later have to sell. Better situation than my M3s - all they do is lose value because neither is manual or special at all. Same would go for a common Mustang or Corvette. The R8 V10 Manuél is at least special and rare enough to retain some value once it bottoms out.

I wish there had been a Manuél version of the R8 GT...

Kinja'd!!!1

Ah I understand.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > CAcoalminer
10/26/2014 at 14:40

Kinja'd!!!0

I also begrudgingly put my 997 on that list. Maybe if it was at least a C2S then it would have a shot of making up some of the depreciation in 20 years. But I doubt that will happen. The base 997 is not a very special car. The 1980s 911s are going up in value but there was no Carrera S back then. The base Carrera will probably be seen as a dog in 20 years.

Kinja'd!!! CAcoalminer > Manuél Ferrari
10/26/2014 at 14:57

Kinja'd!!!0

I wouldn't refer to it as a "dog" but yes it will lose value. However, the vast majority of cars do, even the high end ones. Also, why have you become so fixated on how much a car may be worth in the future? I'm convinced that you should buy the car that you enjoy most, not the one that could potentially make you money. Take me for instance, I currently own a Model S, Range Rover Autobiography, 12c, and 2 GTs. Now, of those, I could probably only make money on the 2 GTs and technically just only the black one because I have invested over $150,000 into the blue one. But do you think I care? No, because I bought them because I liked them or they provide a utility to me. I'm not trying to tell you what to do but I don't want you to live your life constantly thinking about how much your cars are depreciating. Instead, think how much joy they have brought to your life. I mean how many people get to enjoy a manual F430 whenever they want?

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > CAcoalminer
10/26/2014 at 16:49

Kinja'd!!!0

I think about values too much because I spend such a high percentage of my disposable income on cars. And because I can't count on my business doing well (or even being around) forever. Being a bit smarter about what I buy can help reduce how much I spend on cars. But you're right I should enjoy them. I just concluded a nice country drive in the spider. It made me so glad I got the cabrio. It was awesome to hear the engine noise bouncing off the walls when I found a stretch of road with hills on one side.

As far as the Carrera being a dog I know that's a bit harsh. I'm just a bit frustrated with Porsche's pricing strategies. In the old days the base 911 was a solid performance car compared to the competition. Then if you wanted to go nuts you got a Turbo or a special edition such as the 2.7 RS or the RS America. When Porsche started selling the 993 Carrera S it was the faster car but the base Carrera was still good. Then with every generation since then the gap between the Carrera and Carrera S grew. Now this would be fine if the price of the base Carrera was reasonable, but IMO it's not for what you get. The gap between the 997.2 C2 and C2S was pretty large. In retrospect I wish I had just spent the extra money on the C2S at that time. Now with the 991 generation the gap between the two cars is like the Grand Canyon. I've driven the 991 C2 and C2S hard and there is no comparison. Given how much Porsche is charging for the cars and the options the C2S should cost what the C2 costs. But as long as people keep buying them Porsche will keep pricing the cars like this. Hopefully C7, F Type and AMG GT sales cut into 911 sales and force Porsche to lower their prices or give people more options as standard features.

To avoid sounding like I'm preaching, I'll just say that I'm glad you have a plan. I'm sorry if I upset you.

I can understand this. However, there is a reason Porsche has some of the highest margins of any car manufacturer.

I hope the cars you mentioned are successful so that they put pressure on Porsche to offer more in their cars.

Not upset at all! I actually hope that I can get to the point where I don't worry about depreciation too much and just drive the F car more. I know you can't take money with you when you die so the whole point of having nice stuff is to enjoy it. I just need to get to that point mentally. Right now I still think about how the mileage affects the value of my cars. I'm most comfortable putting a ton of miles on the 997 because I've already designated it as the one car I don't care about values on and the E46 M3 because I bought it cheap and can only lose so much on it when I sell it. I could literally put another 40K miles on that car and only lose about $10K if I sold it at that point. There is no better value than a sports car that you buy for $25K with under 35K miles on it!

I think this is the first time in decades when the competition could put some real pressure on Porsche. I didn't cross shop the C6 against the 997 when I was test driving cars. But I definitely would have cross shopped the C7 had it been out back then. And the AMG GT is pretty damn sexy, as is the F Type.

I'm glad to hear that you are conscious of how you are spending your money.

I agree. We'll just have to see how everything works out.
