the E36 M3? (Don't just hate on it either!)
Please chime in!
Especially Snapundersteer, 190E30, etc!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:44 |

Bueno.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:45 |
It's a faster U.S. spec E36. So not bad, just not what it could have been.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:46 |
It's one of 3 BMWs I actually like. That's saying quite a bit!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:46 |

If I had the money would you recommend it to me?
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:46 |

*If* I had the money would you persuade me to buy it?
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:47 |
I like it. A LOT.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:48 |
It's a pretty good car, but for your age insurance is going to be through the roof.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:48 |
Good
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:48 |
A buddy of mine has a sedan. Still kicking at 200,000+ miles. It rocks. I would drive one.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:49 |
Great car. It must be since they appear to valued the same as E46s here in the UK.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:49 |
Just gonna leave this here...
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:49 |
If you had the money to repair it when it breaks, yes. If not, no.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:49 |
When I'm 18 or 19 ;)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:49 |
Going to throw that into the pile of considerations then!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:50 |
It must be good. SO many people show up with them at AutoX.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:50 |
The issue in the states is finding one that hasn't been totaled and has a salvage title... :(
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:50 |
:D
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:51 |
Better start building up that piggy bank...
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:52 |
I rode in one back in September... god those things are fast and fun!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:52 |
I would just buy an RX8 or Miata and call it a day.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:52 |
And they're cheap too! Hmmm...it might have to go on the "what's replacing the Fiesta in a few years" list for me...
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:53 |
Obviously I prefer you in the sportwagen, but yes. It's the last pure M3 before things got out of control. The e30 is overblown, and the e46 is the chariot of BimmerBros. The E36 was also the best looking 3 series ever. Do it.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:53 |
Doesn't go down until your mid-20's. Source: 20.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:54 |
RX8- LOL @ apex seals
Miata- Doesn't have 4 doors... (want to keep it until I was out of college and married. Wouldn't have to sell it!)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:54 |
Well, I love mine but I understand why some people don't. It isn't a racecar when it comes from the factory, but it can be. Feel free to ask questions. I find it easy to work on and the parts are readily available. But I can guarantee that you will need to work on it at some point. Good luck finding one that isn't overpriced, overdriven or rebuilt title (like mine)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:55 |
LOL it is the same situation for me... I want a faster car than what I have, but the only (semi)affordable options are older cars ;)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:56 |
Same here. A lot of the entry E46 M3s are CAT D which means they have been written off by the insurance companies. So E46s are a bit of a bargin which probably explains why they are similarly priced as the E36.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:56 |
BMW- LOL makes all rotaries look cheap to run lol.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:57 |
I want it! As pointed out though the insurance company would get me up the back passage pretty badly right now... gonna have to wait a couple of months :( (BTW the Sportwagen is around $250 / month to insure with comprehensive and liability, I think just about anything is cheaper than that lol. But I wouldn't be selling it!)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 18:58 |
That's weird, I did a quote with our current insurance company (USAA) and they quoted us at around $140 / month for barebones liability with me as the main driver :/ with comprehensive it would probably end up around $180 / month for me (is that good or bad?)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:00 |
For me it's a lot less, can't remember how much, but around 60-70 a month.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:01 |
yes.. Not as expensive as people make you think either. Ask me any questions you have. I've spent days researching lol. I had plans to buy one as a weekend car.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:01 |
Underdog of the ///M lineup, IMO. I really like how they look, but apparently we got a gimped engine over here in the US.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:01 |
Keep in mind, I also drive a cheap 4Runner.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:02 |
D: WOW that is cheap! I'm going to guess you drive a late 90's Toyota 4x4 of some sort?
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:04 |
Was the M3 of the year of my birth therefore I like. Also aesthetically it looks great too.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:04 |
I would want one for fun (AutoCross, possibly RallyCross, trackdays at a real track). Would it be able to stand up to that abuse?
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:04 |
So that makes it cheaper on insurance right?
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:05 |
I would want a 1997/8 4 door with a stick ;)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:07 |
Are you sure? I bet I could find *used* parts for somewhat inexpensive!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:08 |
Yep.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:09 |
How well do they tend to stand up to abuse? (Trackday, bro! Autocross, track day, etc)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:10 |
LOL one of my friends has a 1995 4Runner with 260K miles on it! Still feels solid too!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:10 |
Heh, suuuurrreee!
You could probably (totally not insurance fraud) tell them it's just a bmw sedan...
I know a kid who told the ins.co. what car he had, and they accidentally put the non-sporty, non-turbo model in, so he got billed for that. It was like... half the price, IIRC.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:12 |
Well I figured out that the main issue with this model is the collision coverage (for your car)! I would probably decline and just fix it myself lol it would probably be cheaper than reporting it to your insurance company ;)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:14 |
I bet it's on it's 4th set of head gaskets too lol.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:14 |
98 because of the significance of that year.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:15 |
With rotaries there are very few things to go wrong. On BMW's there are hundreds of things that could go wrong.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:16 |
IDK he bought it with 240K for $2k! NP all day!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:17 |
97 ;)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:17 |
On ALL cars there are hundreds of things to go wrong!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:19 |
On some cars, more things are likely to go wrong at the same time.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:20 |
LOL I think it would be a contest of unreliability between my VW and an M3 ;)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:21 |
Besides the rally cross (might need some minor mods to tolerate that) it should make EASY work of all of that. I mean, it's an M3. It was MEANT to do that. Honestly, If you won't be putting too many miles on it (aka having it as a second car) you'll likely even be able to sell it for only a marginal loss down the road.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:22 |
Hahahaha, no. TDI's have a pretty reliable track record. So if you think the VW is bad, you're gonna have a bad time.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:23 |
I would be using it as a second car, and I would want a 4 door for Insurance purposes (Read: 18/19 year old wants cheaper insurance) and when I get hitched ;)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:26 |
But newer TDI? If you f*ck something up on the inside of the engine, you're gonna get your wallet robbed!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:27 |
That's any engine, especially a diesel.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:31 |
So? My logic still applies! *smug face*
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:52 |
Good car, but it is the unloved stepchild of the M3 generations and is reflected in prices
![]() 10/20/2014 at 19:53 |
you've got it planned out great. If you only drive it under 10k miles a year it'll be cheaper to insure too.
Do it!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 20:10 |
So that is good, right?
![]() 10/20/2014 at 21:30 |
For some reason it doesn't pull at my heartstrings like the e46 and the e92. I still like it though, fantastic car.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 22:50 |
You'd really be better off not getting one. Most all of them suffer from German Car Syndrome: Everything looks great on the outside, but there's about 8 million tiny things broken. It all ads up quickly. Every other day, something else will go wrong and most of them are money pits already.
They're not for the faint of heart, knowledge, or wallet. I don't much understand their appeal. If you want cheap speed, buy something simple. Sorry to burst the bubble, but the same goes for anything rotary either. Those cars are all a huge toss-up. Maybe it's reliable, maybe it blows up in 100 miles.
If you want some cheap autocross type car, which I still advise against, buy something SIMPLE. BMWs are not simple. Rotaries are the complete opposite of simple. I still say Fox Body Mustang.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 22:56 |
I really do want a Fox, but they are all just as ratty, or they are 'worth' 3x as much as they are actually worth :( I want a hatch LX 5.0 with a 5 speed, but any nice one that isn't beat to shit is in thr $7.5K range :'(
![]() 10/20/2014 at 23:05 |
Damn I hadn't noticed how cheap insurance was getting on them! Wow... for me (at 18) it would be in the $125-150 range for liability + comprehensive with a 1991 Hatchback LX V8! I could do that!
![]() 10/20/2014 at 23:20 |
$4000- http://wichita.craigslist.org/cto/4723434131…
$4400- http://wichita.craigslist.org/cto/4622754754…
$1700- http://wichita.craigslist.org/cto/4671210364…
The 4cyl isn't bad for learning really. The 2.3 is bulletproof normally. The Turbo variant in dad's SVO is actually quite fast.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 23:23 |
There is hope after all! Yay! I've been wanting a Fox since before I could drive because of my mom's 89 GT (you know the story right?) but I was basically rejected by my grandfather, who thinks that in the condition it is in (basically scrap) it will fetch $10K (I laughed at that thought)
![]() 10/20/2014 at 23:43 |
Yeah, there should be a super abundance out there. I hadn't even checked KC, OKC, Tulsa, or any of the smaller Craigslists in between (Enid, Salina, KSU, Lawrence, Topeka, SWKS, etc.)
It just takes dedication to search through all of the crap.
![]() 10/20/2014 at 23:53 |
I will find the perfect one... interior doesn't matter lol I would want to swap the seats out for some Corbeau FX1's with 4 Pt. Harnesses (for safety) ;)
![]() 10/21/2014 at 00:22 |
oh very good
![]() 10/21/2014 at 00:48 |
I personally think its the best looking BMW ever made. Its subtle, understyled even but thats what is great. Its also got that wonderful inline 6 and all of the comforts to make it a DD. If you can afford the ownership costs of it then why not?
![]() 10/21/2014 at 02:06 |
Just about as well as they stand up to regular daily driving. Snapundersteer has his out all the time, as you know.
I guess I'd have to advise you not to buy the 1995 as well. I think I'm the only one that likes it. It doesn't make much sense compared to the 96-99.
![]() 10/21/2014 at 07:45 |

I'm not quite so sure any more... (German car syndrome)

I'll just leave you with this: http://www.topgear.com/uk/car-news/bm…
