Here in England our trains have roofs.
They are surprisingly roomy btw.

Is there some good reason why we don't have these nice compact trains instead of the normal big ones?

Lack of toilets. Btw that is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and it is a legit railway with a daily timetable and everything. That said I'm not sure who uses it to commute since the line goes from a Castle to a Nuclear Power-plant.

Economy of scale, most likely. It doesn't cost that much more (relatively speaking) to make a full-size train instead of a 3/4 scale train. At full-scale it can carry a lot more stuff, which more than compensates for the added construction cost.
It's why rail shipping a cargo container cross-country is cheaper than trucking it, and why the biggest boats in the world are for hauling cargo.

Holy crapola, Amtrak needs more funding.
