A while ago, I posted about being gouged on sales tax when I registered my Corvair. I said the car was worth $300, the state argued the car was worth, and it's still hard to say this without throwing up in my mouth, $5,750.

I filled out a two page form, and had a local dealer appraise the car. It was valued at $500. So with a difference in opinion of $5,250, I'm saying I overpaid $367.50 in taxes.

Since it had been three weeks with no news on the status of my appeal, I called the Department of Taxation and managed to get the right person on the phone on my first try. 30 seconds later, having given some basic info, the helpful gent on the other end of the line told me my claim was approved on 10/06 and I should expect a check by the end of the month.

So victory for the proletariat! And the whole of that check is going right into the Corvair, in the form of a 4 carb conversion kit which is good for a 40% hp increase...in my case, that's also a 40hp increase since we're all about 102hp around here right now.

Have some Corvair engine porn in celebration!

Restored to the gills Corvair, sure, might be $5750. I'm guessing yours is more the Abominable Oil-and-Rustman, though.

Mine is actually extremely solid for a New England car, surface rust but no cancer. But it leaks oil pretty good...it didn't when I first got it, so I think my Jaguar has been a bad influence on it.

Well done! The DMV charging sales tax on a used vehicle is criminal. Here in MO we have annual property tax on our cars, too. So much crap.

There's a car show at Mulligans Island in Cranston on the 26th, start spreading the word! I'll be there leaking oil all over their nice new parking lot.

I would do the 4 barrel conversion. Every corvair guy I talk to does it to their factory 4 carb cars. Drove a corvair with one and man what a difference. A lot smoother running than messing with getting all the carbs synced up.

Yeah right 5750 for the nicest Corvair in the world maybe.

Yeah, the factory 4 carbs are problematic. Apparently the 140s used a pair of primaries and a pair of secondaries. Clark's kit just uses four of the regular 2-carb carbs, and it's supposed to be a lot easier to work with then the 140 setup and has a better torque curve. Also, I just prefer the look of the 4 carb, you know? I saw one with velocity stacks on the carbs, looks awesome.

The Jag thoroughly owns the garage...it marked it to the tune of 12 quarts of oil a few months ago. Not my proudest moment.

I found something hilarious . Gonna post it to the main page here in a second. As to nicest Corvair in the world, this one probably isn't it, but leans that way.

I love the looks of multi carbs, my 33 ford has dual fours and my grandpas 56 chevy has 6x2s. I take it then your running 4 Rochester 2GCs? Good carbs but I would but spare parts like crazy because they are getting hard to find.

This should excite you. Here's what I found for sale in our biggest car gathering/swap meet. A complete Corvair turbo set. I recognized the parts immediately even though I haven't ever seen a Corvair with a turbo. And no, I didn't buy the parts as I don't have a Corvair.

Remember what he was asking for it? There's a guy on CL near me selling a setup for like $350. The 180hp Corsas also made 265ft lbs...for comparison, my 102 makes 134 ft lbs. Pretty impressive numbers for 1965.

That said, 50 year old turbo setup kinda scares the hell out of me, haha.

I'm having a brain cramp. Rovers ran a different size bolts for awhile right?

What were they called?

I didn't dare to ask as I would have probably bought it...

$350 doesn't sound like a terribly bad deal.

It's not bad in good condition. That's about the going rate for a whole non-turbo engine, at least near me. But they're getting harder to find, so if you've got an older Corsa convertible and you need it, $350 is a great deal.
