Everyone is apparently pretty heated about this one. I am just curious as to who has actually had a bad experience with police officers? What happened? Why do you think things got ugly? How did it get resolved?

I am apparently older than most here (46), and grew up in a much different era than now, what are you younger peoples experiences like?

I've never had a bad experience with a police officer. Most have been very helpful when shit has hit the fan.

I had my trunk searched when I went to Canada once. That probably doesn't count though since getting searched at a checkpoint like a border crossing is hardly unexpected.

I have had the truck searched, mirrors underneath and all that jazz entering the USA from Canada.

The guy said, and I quote "You are the lucky 150th vehicle today, you win a full vehicle search!"

He is also the guy that quotes Super Troopers whenever possible.

Only talked to police once when something happened to my friend. Wouldn't do anything because the other person was under 16 and didn't do anything bad enough. They were pretty helpful and kind but couldn't do anything.

Most near me when we've been lulled over are pretty nice people. Never had a bad experience.

Had my car searched once while coming back from Canada with some friends. The guard goes through the trunk, found some toy light-up swords (yeah, we're awesome), and proceeded to examine the bags. Opened one bag, there were several different feminine products right on top (as there was a girl with us). He looked around the car with a beet red face, "I'm guessing this bag is yours?". We all burst out laughing and he let us go from there.

All in all, great experience.

I have.

I was driving home from my girlfriend's house at 10:30 in my first car. It was a Nissan with over 200,000 miles and a weird electrical gremlin having to do with the passenger headlight that caused the headlight to occasionally not work when in the low beam position, even though the bulb was fine (it was fixed quickly after this night). I was 17 at that point so I still had legal curfew of 11pm, and I know it takes exactly 22 minutes to get home from her house. I left and the headlamp was fine, but about halfway home it cut out. I used my high beams when I could because those worked, but eventually I was pulled over.

I didn't everything you're supposed to do. Car off, window down, dome lights on, papers ready, hands on the wheel. The cop asked if I knew I had a headlamp out and I said yes, that it cut out that same night and I would fix it the next day. He said that was fine, took my license and registration, and went back to his car. At that point I thought I would get a fix-it-ticket and be on my way.

Nope. He came back with my papers and 'informed' me that in the town I was in, all traffic stops are subject to be searched by a K9 unit. As I later found out, this was not true. He asked me to put the blower on, windows up, and step out of the car so I did but by this point it was past 11 so I asked him if I could call my mom to let her know that I would be late for curfew but that I was fine, because I had never been late before and I knew she would worry. He said that was fine. The dog sniffed around my car and didn't find anything, but the cop still searched through my car because of something the dog did (this is actually possible. Who knows, maybe there was ground up weed in the carpet). He asked if I had any drugs or money in the car. I said no and, he began his search, finding nothing. At this point he was a little aggravated that he could only give me a fix-it-ticket and I was aggravated that he had kept me so long after curfew, so when he was done with his search I asked him if I was free to go.

He begrudgingly said yes, but only after giving me a ticket and a warning for being out past curfew...

I had the electrical issue fixed, and didn't have to pay the ticket, but the entire thing was kind of messed up. In the town I was in all traffic stops were not subject to be sniffed out, so he searched my car illegally and then gave me a warning for being out past curfew when it was entirely his fault. And when I asked him what I should say if I was pulled over for my headlight again that night, this time well after curfew, he said "Just don't get pulled over, kid."

Thanks. That's really helpful.

When I was younger I would have said "Yea, F the police, those pigs pull me over and harass me all the time", because they did.

But now that I am older (being a relative term as I have just turned 28) I look back and say that most of the "harassment" was well warranted and I was just an ignorant kid acting out.

The one time I can truly say I got harassed, I had done literally nothing wrong, I was driving to my friends house on a Friday evening, was not speeding, following every sign to the T. Cop pulls me over, gives me some BS about I pulled you over for speeding, which irked me as it was one of the few times I actually wasn't. Then he starts calling me names and verbally harassing me, trying to make up things wrong with my car (your tail lights are illegal | how? | not DOT approved | Then why is there a DOT stamp right here?). He called me a punk kid, fucking asshole, little shit, and prick, then made me get out and searched my car, for an hour...

He let me go, I turned around, drove home, told my father what happened (my father was friendly with the police chief), and about 30 minutes later that officer showed up at my doorstep to offer me a sincere verbal apology for his actions (that was REALLY satisfying to me, the at the time 17 year old kid).

But that's pretty much the worst that I've got.

The only other bad one was in Boston area, I was coming back from Canobie Lake park (it's an amusement park) with my now ex. I was 21 and had a basically brand new Mustang with an aftermarket exhaust. I was driving down an unfamiliar stretch of highway and the exit I needed to take was a left side exit (I was all the way to the right, thinking it was like every other exit everywhere else...), she had gotten sick and wasn't feeling well. I had to make a last minute cut across all the lanes to make an exit, State police a bit back saw the move, pulled me over, came up to the car noticing I was a young kid and started getting loud with me asking me who I was trying to race? (... yeah... that prius or the other 6000 cars surrounding me in traffic?). Once I explained I was unfamiliar with the area (hence the out of state plates) and was just trying to get home as she was sick, he calmed down a bit and once he ran my plates and found everything in order, told me to "get out of here and watch it!".

So there's my two "OMG, cops are so bad" stories. Most of the cops I've dealt with are cool as long as you're not a dick to them.

Nothing major but I got pulled over for backing down a driveway in neutral (looked like reverse lights were out) by a cop in our town who's well-known for hassling kids with loud cars. After I showed him my lights worked he got all pissed off and demanded to see my muffler and cat to prove my exhaust wasn't illegally modified (it's bone stock) and pressured me repeatedly to let him search my car and got even more pissed off when I refused. Funny thing is I've been pulled over five times before in this town and those dudes were the models of professionalism, Rodgers is just a massive dick.

I was in a friends car and he got pulled over, the cop pulled out so many empty 1/2 pints that the cop stopped counting & gave up realizing that it would have been impossible for us to have drank so much. He told us to "get out of here" I imagine he didn't want to do the paperwork. Even though we had been drinking...

I've had a few to varying degrees. One was a speeding ticket I earned, was courteous and all went smoothly. But then the cop took the full time to enter it so I had to go to the county courthouse during one specific day or I would be past the due date to pay.

The other was when I was in high school, some little brat kid lost some money at a football game, like $8. Somehow he decided I did it, "the big mean kid" (I was 6'3" 200lbs then). Cop comes, pulls me and another kid over makes us stand and question us, asked if we had money and how much. (Everyone caries cash, what good would this have done) I had a single $20 bill, so I obviously hadn't stolen it. Cop eventually tells me and the other guy "If either of you are lying, I'm taking both of you to jail." Then the principle walks over and asks me what is going on. I explain it to her. She basically tells the cop he's an idiot and another student comes by and says he saw about that amount of money on the ground 30 minutes-1 hour ago. Cop begrudgingly lets me go.

As a result of those and other interactions, not a fan of the small town cops and Sheriffs where I grew up.

Had another in Georgia for "hiding behind the B Pillar" (6'5" at this point, seat has to be far back) and not putting my head out the window to greet him(I did greet him but did so sitting still instead of making movements towards him as he approached). Had to get out of my car with the cop holding his gun. Proceeds to be a jerk the whole time. It was part of a ticket handout operation that was a joke in itself.

When I was 18 I moved to DC to work for a summer. I had my s2000 for four months and went down to Virginia Beach for the weekend. I did something very silly down Atlantic ave and was pulled over by many police. I was taken from the car, I did anything to make it easier on the cops. They searched my entire car with my consent, and found nothing of course. I left with a warning because the policeman, who was dressed and talked just like Lt Dangle from Reno 911, did not want to ruin my future. Anytime I've been pulled over I deserved it, and worked with the police. Lessons learned, maturity happened, now I don't do things to cost me frivilous money.

This story dates to 1986 or so. I was 16 and had had my first car for about 5 months. I was coming back from my girlfriend's house around 1130 at night on a Thursday, on a road that I knew the cops tended to patrol so keeping it around the speed limit. Importantly, I was drinking a can of Diet Coke (just like I am doing right now decades later).

A police car pulled up behind me, so I looked down and made sure I was doing exactly the speed limit (which I was). He stayed behind me for about a mile or two. I knew he was going to pull me over because, c'mon, cops always speed. Sure enough, he hit the lights and I pulled over immediately.

I did all the right stuff as instructed by my father (window open, radio off, hands on wheel). He comes up to the window and, before saying anything, sticks his big cop face in the window to look between my legs. Where he sees a can of Diet Coke. And obviously was expecting/hoping to see a beer. So I say "Uh, can I help you?"

Thus began 30 minutes of "have you been drinking" "did you slow down because you saw me" [even at 16 I wasn't stupid enough to respond to this] "why is the name on the rego not yours" [Um, same last night, obviously my parents] "what are you doing out here so late" [going home], etc.

No ticket, but the cop even had the balls to say "don't let me pull you over again". OK, sir, I'll flee next time as instructed.

I take after my dad in appearance, which means think lily-white Scotsman, in my early 30s. I've still gotten pulled over a few times in the town my parents live in (it starts with "S" and ends in "imi Valley"), but I've never been pulled over anywhere else.

The first time, I got a ticket that I thought I deserved, since the officer claimed I'd violated a law that I'd never heard of. I paid my fine and went to traffic school so as not to get the points. At the end of the traffic school, the instructor asked if anyone had questions specific to the ticket they got. I asked about my ticket, and the instructor got this puzzled look on his face and said "That's not against the law!"

The second time I got pulled over, the officer claimed I was going 70 in a 45 MPH zone. I told the officer, "I was watching my speed, and my speedometer didn't go past 50." He shone his flashlight onto my dashboard and told me, totally straight, "You liar, your speedometer goes all the way up to 120!" He took my license and registration, then came back a while later, told me he wasn't going to give me a ticket, and told me to "slow down."

The third time is one I've shared before on Oppo, where I got a ticket for a right turn against a red right turn arrow, at an intersection with no red right turn arrow. I got out of that one in court, for obvious reasons. The sucky thing is that in CA, you have to pay your fine in full up front before you're allowed to contest it, so I was out the $490 fine for about 2 months before I got a refund.

When an unlicensed driver rear-ended me at a light and killed my Miata, the officers there were friendly and sympathetic towards me (not so much towards the unlicensed driver), so I know that good officers exist. It's a shame they allow their image as a whole to be tarnished by officers who act like bullies.

My kid brother is another case altogether; he's been legitimately harassed by police in at least 3 states. He takes after my mom, which means Native American features and darker skin. But the request was for personal stories, so I can't count his stories :).

I was at Sheetz when I lived in Pennsylvania, walking out of the store with my food when I noticed a police car slow down to a crawl. I didn't think anything about it, just figure he was debating stopping there. I leave Sheetz and about half a mile away I see headlights pull out of a side street. I recognized the lights, they were from a new Explorer. It was the cop. He followed me around for a couple of miles, then right before I made it to the highway, he pulled me over. He then proceeds to bombard me with questions about where I had been. I asked him why he pulled me over, he told me he had "suspicions". So, basically no reason but to be a dick. I didn't get searched, but haven't trusted them since. If he wanted to investigate "suspicions", I would have answered his questions when he first watched me.

Driving as fast as I did when I was younger coupled with national 55 MPH speed limits, I got to meet a LOT of cops on the side of the road. Generally speaking, most transactions were forgettable tickets that I tried to fight. I had the speeder's guide that told me all about the stuff that we learned last week here on how to reduce your chances of getting ticketed. I still got a lot of tickets, but never really got harassed too much. Most cops are professional when treated with some general respect...especially the State Troopers.

Except 'that one'. I had a 1982 Turbo Regal with tinted windows (illegal in Michigan). On a quiet Saturday morning in a not large town, I was headed to my buddy's wedding, so I was dressed nicely, the car was cleaned very well. In fact, let me preface this with the fact that I had painted this car entirely. We are talking taken apart down to the sheetmetal and really painted. Door jambs, trunk bottom, inner fenders, everything. Which means the stickers on the back of the door got removed and stuck in an envelope in the glovebox until I had a chance to figure out how to reinstall them. This will be important later.

Sitting at a stoplight, minding my own business in the rightmost lane of a 4-lane road with left turn lanes in the middle. The only problem was that it was about 50ºF out and I see the Trooper rolling up behind me in the next lane. I got the windows rolled down in time (I thought), but he wasn't buying it. He got stopped just as the light turned green, so I took off slowly, hoping he would go ahead. Nope. Pulls behind me with the lights on.

He is a pretty young guy, probably mid to late 20's. I am only like 22 or 23 at the time, so barely older than me. He immediately starts with the accusations that I am trying to hide something serious. Tinted windows. This is a serious offense :-) Maybe not serious itself, but certainly an entry offense that leads to things like murder and gang violence. Because I am a young white kid with Miami Vice clothes and sunglasses.

So, the search begins. He immediately gloms onto the missing door stickers. He suspects the car is stolen. We go through all of the paperwork. I own the car, paid with cash (seriously, all $1500 of it). Insurance is up to date. Plate is up to date. VIN checks out as not stolen. But the missing door stickers on a freshly painted car means there is something very wrong about this situation.

He is alternating between screaming at me with his hand on his gun and searching my car with a fine tooth comb. He has also called for backup. I am advised to stand back and be very careful about my movements, because he is concerned that I might be hiding something big. He empties out my trunk, the cabin, the glove box, the console, removes the rear seat bottom, the trunk liner, the spare tire and jack, the air cleaner. He's looking down inside the door between the window and the felt seal. He's feeling around the frame.

He managed to determine that the name tag on my sleeping bag had a different address than my license (I had the sleeping bag since I was like 13 and had moved).

He also find some contraband: a half package of Black Cat firecrackers. And an incriminating lighter.

I am literally on the verge of being hauled to jail and having my car impounded for the battery of offences at hand. We have probably been here for well over 30 minutes at this point and possibly pushing an hour. Then, the backup arrives. The backup is an older guy and he gets filled in on what is going on. They talk for a few minutes and then he comes over and asks me a couple of questions about the concerns the younger guy has. Satisfied, he tells the younger guy to write me a repair citation for the tinted windows and send me on my way.

It was surreal. To this day, I still believe that I was precariously close to sitting in the slammer for a few hours that day. Then, I had to put my car all back together. Got to the wedding as it was letting out. The best part was that I kept calm and parted with a cheery "Thanks for making sure I wasn't doing anything wrong" statement. He would have put a bullet through me if he could.

Word to the wise - don't look remotely questionable in a city with an oversized police force.

El Segundo California (Where the Sewer Meets the Sea) is home to a huge refinery and a large number of Fortune 500 companies, and as a result has lots of tax revenue. And they use that money to staff a police force that is considerably more than is necessary for this sleepy little burg.

One night, after missing the turn for the strip mall, a friend made a U-turn in the driveway of a large office tower. Out of nowhere the cops arrived and pulled us over. I'm a geek/engineer type, but my friend is a session guitarist and looks the part. Not helping matters was the fact that we were in a borrowed Gran Fury from the early '70s, and I think it was a former police car (this was a loaner whilst his Jeep was in the shop).

Two more cars arrived, as did the helicopter with the searchlight. We sat there on the curb for 45 minutes whilst they picked through the car and did a more intense background search than I went through to get a top-secret clearance. The cops were polite, but the stop and search, as well as the additional coverage, were completely unnecessary and over-the-top considering that we hadn't done a single illegal activity.

They did ask about some hoses in the back of the car, but since it was a loaner we had no clue that they were there or what they were for. The only thing they said we could have been written up for was a crack in the windshield. 6+ officers, 3 squad cars and a friggin' helicopter all for a cracked windshield? Mind you, this is the same town that, according to an older friend of mine, used to have a sign saying 'No N***ers' on the greeting sign on Main Street. The sign may be gone, but the attitude remains.

The whole town felt that way, wary of anyone daring to venture in from the outside. Perhaps working at Hughes Aircraft at the time bought me a little credibility, but I still felt uncomfortable every time I ventured off of the main roads. I never could understand the place - $800K 60-year-old shacks with the smell of the sewage treatment plant at one end and the 24/7 noise from LAX just to the north (those of us on the north side of LAX got some peace and quiet, with a curfew running from midnight until 0600 or thereabouts). Unless I came down with xenophobia I can't see any reason why I would want to live there.

My last flight a month ago I forgot about a knife in my carry on... got hauled off to the police station but they were really nice about it. Explained I'd been using it for work and simply forgot about it. It still had glue on it from the boxes I'd been opening. Got away with out even a warning or mention of it on my record officially..

I fully expect to be cavity searched on my next flight though.

Last year I got on 4 to 8 planes a month (connections though, so only 2-4 security checks) and I got "randomly" checks almost every time. I've since trimmed the beard quite a bit. It seems to have helped. If I fly with my girlfriend, who is German and French so very, very white, it helps even more.

It's funny you mention that story, actually. I just made a round-trip journey to South Carolina with a small (3" blade) knife in my backpack that I had completely forgotten about. I passed through a total of 6 security checkpoints and no one even mentioned it. I even got away with a 5oz bottle of face wash in my carry-on... So abnormal for my flying experiences.

I wasn't going to comment on this topic but you reminded me of an old experience that made me laugh. Like the OP, I'm a little older than most here - over 50. And truth be told, I am black (but I'm quite literate ;) )

Yes, I have been harassed by the police. More times than I care to share, but here's one instance. I attended a small college on the side of a mountain in Colorado called the United States Air Force Academy. Back then, no cadets were allowed to own a car until you were a senior, so when I was finally allowed, I went over the top and bought a Jag.

Kinja'd!!!

Needless to say, I had no idea what I was buying and it needed major repairs before it would be considered a daily driver. Long story short, the day I finally got it running, I impatiently couldn't wait to take it out for a drive and got pulled over for absolutely no good reason.

By the time the cop got out of his car and walked up to mine, I was laughing so hard I could barely speak. He was confused by all this, took my papers, ran my plates and 20 minutes later when I was all laughed out sent me on my way (no ticket, no explanation for the stop, no nothing) without a word.

Why was I laughing you ask.... picture this. A civilian friend let me store and work on my car in his garage in town. He lived in a brand new subdivision - avg house 200K. The Jag is bright white, 2years old, and only 3 exist in the whole state. And behind the wheel of this one... in this neighborhood... is a little black kid (I was 20 and looked 15), my hair looked like I had been in a girl fight, my hands, arms, shirt, and pants were cover in dirt, grease oil and filth. I LOOKED LIKE I STOLE THE CAR AND HAD TO WORK FOR IT! To me, this was hilarious.

But then 2 weeks later, in another part of town, I was stopped again. This time, I was in my Mess Dress (military equivalent to tuxedo & tails) and full military regalia. Late to pick up my date, I was aggravated to wait 20 minutes with no ticket and no explanation (no, I was not speeding or breaking any laws).

A week later it happened a third time. This guy was nice and admitted he stopped me because he'd never seen an XJS before and wanted to check it out. But, I'd had enough. I went down to the police station with a handfull of 8x10 pictures of me standing next to the car captioned with my info and the car's tag, vin, etc. and passed them out, posted them on bulletin boards and informed the desk sergeant that the next time this car gets pulled over it better be for an arrest or my lawyer was going to make me a very rich man.

I never got pulled over again. But really... did it have to come to such drastic measures.

Thats a Really cool story. I wish you made it a full post though, this deserves front page status. I think you handled that situation awesomely. Do you have authorship?

Yes, I have authorship. I'm an old fart with stories from 30 years ago. I'll post up when I have something new to add.

Stay tuned I run my XLR-V again in the Texas Mile next weekend....

ME!!!!! The amount of times I've been pulled over for literally doing nothing wrong borders on the absurd.

This one time really pissed me off. I was going up a road and a cop was behind me. I had just turned onto the road, I used to live in the area but moved away about 10 years ago, so I forgot if the road was 40km/h or 50 km/h and there were no signs. I go 50km/h. Once I see a 40km/h sign, I slow down to 40. Boom. Nailed. 50 in a 40 zone. (or 31 mph in a 24 mph zone).

The only ticket I've ever gotten from police was for running a red light on a bike. It was on a night in town where hundreds of people gather on bicycles, and then ride a few laps around the main block of town. Its awesome fun, but cops hate it because the roads are clogged with cyclists - who can legally ride in the road, but are still kinda a nuisance.

Anyway, I was in the back of one pack of bikes, went through a light that wasn't red, and got a ticket anyway - I'm sure they had a quota or something for the night. I was pretty pissed, and I swear the cop knew exactly what he was doing even though he acted very professional.

A friend of mine and i got pulled over and searched by the police for being white in a minority neighborhood. we were fully cooperative, but were pulled out of the truck and patted down while two other officers tore the truck apart, and then were in utter disbelief that i lived less than 500 yards from where they got us.

not all cops are bad, but there are some that are REAL assholes. case and point, i had a Houston PD cruiser go out of his way to come sniff my rear bumper not half an hour ago. wasnt speeding, wasnt doing anything wrong. but i watched him post up, wait for me to pull back out, then he came charging up my ass to get a look at me.

Thought of another example.

was headed home from a party late on night, came across a truck sitting in the middle of the highway just at the base of a small rise, damn near hit the thing as i came over the crest. pulled over immediately assuming it was a medical issue and also to get the vehicle the hell out of the road.

turns out, wasn't a medical issue, the driver was drunk as could be and had passed out. could smell the booze wafting through the window, and to make things even better the douchebag could barely speak English. i tried to get him to pull into the grass esplanade that would have kept him out of traffic, but the fucker took off. so immediately, i dial up 911 and they send a cruiser out. unfortunately, the drunk shit bag had passed out of the first cops jurisdiction by the time he arrived, but had called an Houston officer to the scene so i could fill him in.

first cop was pearland PD, was very polite, professional, and actualy a bit chatty as we waited for HPD to show up. the one that came from Houston, TOTAL asshole. chewed me out for putting a drunk back on the road because now he had to go chase him down. now i will freely admit, i got fucking mouthy because of the officers demeanor. called him a few unflattering names, and basically told him he could blow me. luckily, the Pearland cop was still around and backed me up, stating that what another driver did was no fault of my own and in fact commended me for attempting to be a decent human being. HPD officer roared away, and i went on my way home.

moral of the story, there are plenty of decent cops out there. and there are a good number of utter ASSHOLES as well.

SIDEBAR: i really wish there was a faster way to vector in an officer to your location to deal with Drunk drivers in Houston. even going straight for 911, the fuckers usually figure out im following long before the cops show up. ive almost caught one, but thats as close as ive gotten.
