For some, this won't be that hard. For others, they'll laugh at its name. For the rest, guess away.
I don't think this is actually that uncommon of a part, depending on what type of car you're in to, but when I had to replace mine no one knew what the hell I was talking about.
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Yes that's really what its called.

giubo or flex coupler.

Oooh boy! It's giubo time!
Did you talk to BMW guys when you had to replace yours? Because I find it hard to believe that a BMW enthusiast who works on their car themselves has not heard of this miracle of disposable engineering.

Don't know the name (until I click the link after posting this) but I know they're used on the couplings for driveshafts and sometimes propshafts.

Bane of my existence on my E46.

I've encountered the "real" name, but never used it. Flexible drive disc is descriptive enough.

I always called them rag joints or flex couplers.

Those go on a Lotus Elan.

Rubber transmission coupling. Basic design has been around for decades and was/is a popular alternative to CV and U-joints.

In British car land they call them "rotoflex couplings".

I have a very intimate knowledge of the lovely driveshaft giubo. Obviously you all now know that I drive an older BMW.

I've been told that I have a gwee-bo in the torque tube of my C5... but I've never seen it so I call it Schrodinger's Guibo.

This is how they come from the BMW factory:

You are most correct.

Mmmm flex disk or the guibo. Worked at a place last year that made and sold em. Piles of them allll over.

A Guibo, or as my friend jokingly called it, a "drivetrain fuse."

Giubo*
Don't perpetuate the misspelling.

Dammit. I know this too, as I was tasked with taking photos and updating online catalog and excel lists.

Damn, late to the game but frack the person who came up with a brittle rubber piece for the driveline.

Muffler bearing... Right?
![]() 10/16/2014 at 15:22 |

I've seen that a just one time on my c5z...then solid aluminum...then elastomer, now carbon...next time Zr1.

It's a donut of compressed rubber bands that will come unwound and spontaneously disintigrate at the most inopportune time. I can't recall if my E36 M3 had one or two of the damnable things.

I talked to people at Napa, Autoparts Unlimited, and a few other parts stores but none of them seemed to know what I needed. I got a lot of "what the hell is a gwee-bo?" Eventually I just called I.E. and they knew exactly what I was talking about. I didn't used to be into BMWs, so most of my friends have Japanese cars or just non-BMWs. If I were to ask my car friends now, most of them would know exactly what I was talking about.

Yes, the 2002 and I have gone through a few giubos as well. It comes with the territory! Ahaha.
![]() 10/16/2014 at 15:48 |

But giubo is funnier than flexible drive disk, and makes non-BMW people scratch their heads. Call Napa and ask for a giubo. It's a very entertaining and slightly maddening experience (at least with the Napa people near me)

That is far too accurate to be a joke.

Really? Mine came like this. Must've been an added option

You and me both, buddy. I'm on my third on the 2002.

I... yeah. Wow. Can tat be added to the Wiki page because thats a better description than most.

I'm on the Mercedes side of the equation, which means enough professors and lower income yuppies getting parts that calling things by their echter Korrekt name is less popular.

Do you have two??? God, I am so sorry. I though one was annoying enough.
![]() 10/16/2014 at 15:57 |

Yup. Or at least just as dumb as a muddler bearing, but unfortunately very, very necessary.

Yes, I'm running a DSS carbon now without guibos at all, but it has a bit of NVH in the triple digits. When I swap to a ZR1 trans/diff/cradle at some point, I'll run the ZR1 guibos as well as they're very strong and vibrationless.
