Kinja'd!!!

So my backyard has this really tall dead tree in it, and whenever it rains, these two big vultures (condors? buzzards?) go to the very top, on the same exact branches every time, and when it rains they shake around and get as wet as possible (I figure they are showering), and when the rain stops they spread their wings and sit there majestically for like an hour (I figure they are drying out). I realize this is probably normal behavior but it's super cool to see these two huge birds (probably like 5-6 foot wingspan, heck maybe 7) just facing me, sitting on these two branches, with their huge wings spread out, chillin'. The first photo makes it look like the one on the right just landed, but no, he was just sitting there like that. Nature is awesome, guys.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

By the way, as I'm sure you all know I'm a huge fan of iPototo cameras, but obviously this isn't a iPotato. This is a telephoto lens on a mirrorless.

Update: Pretty sure these are turkey vultures, wingspan up to 72 inches (6 feet) according to wikipedia:

Kinja'd!!!

I realize they eat dead stuff and are kind of morbid, but hey, it's pretty cool. I took those pictures almost two hours ago and they are still sitting in the exact same place on the exact same tree, but now the wings are folded in and they are just hanging out.

DOUBLE UPDATE!!!:

So apparently what they are doing is called the "Horaltic Pose", listen to the Birdologists:

"Turkey Vultures appear to spread their wings for at least two reasons: (1) to dry feathers, and (2) to ameliorate the thermal gradient between themselves and their environment"

Nah, these things are my bros. They have been doing this, on that same tree, for years. I like them. They like me. We hang on the weekends.

They're patient beasts, but clever, and have been coming back to the same spot regularly so that you'll feel comfortable with them there. It's normal, everything's fine!

In your final agonizing minutes - as they're picking out your eyeballs and feasting on your spleen - you will gain great respect for the power of Nature as you simultaneously regret having put your confidence in birds. These birds are not your "bros".

Literally 0% chance I'm clicking it. What would my vulture bros think? They are literally looking at me right now.

I wouldn't get any work done if I could watch vultures.

Ha, I'm off today and just got some pretty major stuff done earlier this week, so the chance of me doing work right now (today) is roughly 0%.

to ameliorate the thermal gradient between themselves and their environment

Wouldn't it be easier to say "they spread their wings to cool off"?

Once I was driving a box truck down a narrow road...when a turkey vulture swooped down from somewhere behind the cab of the truck to fly right in front of it. What a surprising sight that was.
