I was just granted authorship, so I thought I would introduce myself (Thanks to his Royal Highness Maxyenko).
Back in my youth I was crazy about cars. I lived overseas until the 6th grade and the only cars I saw besides pickups and old Toyotas were my Matchbox cars. When we moved back to the States we moved to Montgomery County MD which is a fairly wealthy area and not far from DC. All of a sudden I was seeing sports cars, muscle cars, luxury cars, etc. every single day! I really freaked out when I saw the occasional Ferrari or even Lamborghini. I got into to cars like many kids get into baseball. I could name almost any car just by looking at the tail lights. I covered my room with car posters and built model cars. I had subscriptions to Motor Trend and Car & Driver.
Fast forward many years and I've got a wife and 3 kids. Since the kids I've had two minivans, a station wagon (Volvo!) and an Elantra (stick though!), and I'm totally out of touch with the car world. Until I found Jalopnik and Oppo! You guys have reawakened my inner gearhead.
Just recently my Elantra got totaled. It was a '99 so I'm not getting much from the insurance settlement, but I made a promise to myself to get something interesting to replace it. The era of boring is over!

I like that you had a hitch on the Elantra - ever tow anything?

Welcome to Oppo, brotha...the land of the free and the home of the brown diesel stick shift station wagon.

Welcome to Oppo. Need any suggestions for an interesting car?

Damn! I can't believe how close you got. It was Saudi Arabia.

Yep. I burned up my clutch taking a huge load of drywall home from home depot.

You should consider a Mazda 3.

Oh I see. Well, you know what they say, close only counts in hand grenades and horseshoes.
Sorry about your elantra btw...I hate it when other idiots cause me to lose a car.

Sure! For nostalgia's sake I'm looking at old Volvos and 924s. It's got to have a back seat and I'm pretty set on a stick and rwd or awd.

Welcome! I very recently joined as well, and was in a very similar situation . What are you looking for in the replacement? Anything specific?

Would love but no back seat.

I wish I knew what happened to them. Now my kids have a pile of hot wheels.

Since you said it needs a back seat, I have a feeling the 924 might not be the best option for that. I'd go for a Subaru if you want a bit of practicality. Maybe one of the higher-end models with more go fast bits.

See above. after reading your post we'd probably be after something similar, but my budget is way lower. I'm basically looking for an interesting beater.

An old Ford Fiesta just popped up in my area for $850. Slightly interesting, and definitely a beater... That's more of a joke than anything, but you can take it how you want.
