Do we consider the Model T transmission to be Manuel, something like a funky auto, or on a higher plane of existence? As it does not use los manos to operate usually, is its true name Pedro?

I wouldn't call it manual... I would call it a deathtrap. My understanding of it (I tried to help a guy start one once) is that you hold the pedal to the floor for low, somewhere in the middle for neutral, and let go for high. That means if you fall out of the friggin thing, it's going to keep right on going until your passengers manage to get into the seat or turn it off. It also means that even though you might be trying to start in Neutral, there's a good chance you are in Low and going to crash through your garage when you hit the key...

But maybe I misunderstand the thing.

No, you're pretty dead on. I drove one once, had to remember to pull the handle to stop only just in time, and the column throttle is a menace. It makes it like an unreasonably fast tractor.
