I think the wife found out about the girlfriend, and now he has a whole lot more 'mods' done to the car than just a permanently popped hood...

Who knows? maybe he didn't shut it all the way last time it was open. But that's definitely an open hood, not a panel gap.

Probably just hit the hood pop by accident. There is no way any modern manufacturer or dealer would let that leave the floor like that.
