Is this aftermarket, or a factory option?
It only appears on one side, too. This Mercedes (W124?) looks pretty stock otherwise.

factory on the w124 turbo diesels 90+ I think. I have seen them on the 300D 2.5 and 3.0 variants. Love that touch
Nice typical busted hood release tab though, fixed with wire

Apparently, it was a standard feature on diesel models for better combustion.

This is a 300D, so that would make sense. Thanks for that little piece of knowledge.
I didn't even notice the hood release fix.

What is if for? exit path for the intercooler?

My hood release tab was intact until over 300k miles, but it *did* get broken, and it *is* fixed with wire like that.

straight up air intake right there. IIRC the w201 diesels also had something similar

seems odd, they must have had a decent Air/water seperator in the airbox then.

It was stock on the Diesel mercs

I had an '87 300D that did not have the vent. Glad it didn't.

I think that the vent was there only with W124 300 turbodiesel models and the intake air goes through it. N/A models just suck the air from the engine compartment. Here the vents are a common addition among diesel M-B enthusiasts.

Definitely a stock option, very rare though.
