since we're posting jaguars today. yesterday i drove from downtown philadelphia home to nyc. about 80% of this drive is up the NJ turnpike. fairly boring ~8pm, especially now that its dark by this time.

So... i figured i'd settle in and see what kind of mileage she could get.

Kinja'd!!!

unverified results from the trip computer. this was the maximum that the avg mpg reached... right around exit 14 for the holland tunnel.

cruising speed was ~65mph. and sometimes slowed down below 60 going up hills.

anyway... 18.5 mpgs.

by the time i overheated and had to pull over near my apartment it had dropped down toward 17.9

"by the time i overheated and had to pull over near my apartment"

Sounds like a Jag to me!

I think it was one of the Road And Track editors that once bet his Jaaaaag mechanic that he couldn't have both the AC and the heat working on any given day.

The mechanic didn't take the bet.

I love how the overheating sounded imminent. "Okay, it's going to overheat, let's just see how far we can get..." Classic Jaguar.

Neat :) I tried hypermiling in my XJ40 4.0l manual a while back. Managed to get it up to 33ish mpg (UK) without any real knowledge of how hypermiling works.

Which XJS do you have? HE or pre-HE? What's it like to drive? I've always wanted one :)

to be fair...

the previous owner of this jaguar, in an attempt to remedy the stock cooling system's inadequacies, replaced the belt driven fan with an electric fan. of course he put the controlling electrical bits right behind the front grill. so when its raining the whole thing shorts and the main fan doesn't work—hence the overheating. i rarely drive in the rain now, unless i know i'm going quickly to highway speeds and then quickly shutting down. unfortunately... didn't find a parking spot in time on this occasion. (and i didn't check the whether before i left in the morning)

nonetheless... "let's see how far we can get" is a thought that frequently floats through my mind.

its a '91. so its HE 5.3L

she's a dream to drive when she's running well. which is about 40-50% of the time.

pulls at any speed except from a stand still. the rear gearing is 2.88, coupled with an old gm th400 3-speed and 0-60 times are in the "when i feel like it" range.

previous owner put in highflow intakes, and removed the cats, so she breathes a bit better. he also put in a stiffer rear anti-roll bar to tighten up the handling. i replaced the original 15inch wheels with the 18 inch asteroids from a 2001 xjr. and the smaller sidewall very much improves that "grounded to the ground" feeling.

At least yours drives. Mine is alternating (heh) between overcharging at 18v and undercharging at 13v. Needs a voltage regulator.

And it seems to me that the last thing I'd ever want to do is add something electrical to my Jag. Anything on there that's manual or mechanical can stay just that way, thank you very much.

Sweet :) I've been toying for ages with trying to make an E46 M3-fighter out of an XJS. The requisite specs would be ~350bhp and ~1550kg. With that, I've got the option of an HE 5.3 V12, the 4.0 AJ6 and the 4.0/4.2 AJV8.

I've worked out I should be able to get the V12 down to about 1550kg with a good deal of lightweight components, and there's something epic about a proper V12 sports car (especially with a manual 'box as I've got planned).

The other option would be the 4.0l I6, which I reckon I could get to 350bhp with a decent exhaust, a bump in compression, some porting and ITBs. There's already a manual 'box stock on a minority of them so that'd be that out of the way. Plus, it'd be a lighter to begin with so less money spent on weight reduction. No V12 though...

Lastly the AJV8 would be very easy to get to 350bhp, would get better fuel economy than either of the other two and I could set it further back in the engine bay for better weight distribution. It'd also have an epic soundtrack through opened exhausts :) tricky to get a manual 'box to work though...

beautiful. even when they aren't running.

i've always loved the s3 xj6. if i needed 4 usable seats at this time, it would definitely be on my list.

The XJS is still quite the looker. Why not get one of those radio shack project boxes to keep the electric fan controller in? Just weather seal it with silicone.

Far better than overheating it.

have you been to jaguarforums? lots of good info over there on the xjs board. a lot of guys who've had their jags for years and are a great source of information.

with regard to power increases... i believe youre in the UK? so at least your HE's are pushing 300hp stock. and you might be able to squeeze those extra 50hps out of somewhere. but what ive heard is that the HE cylinder head is the real power limiting component, and pre-HEs are where you could really find power. (that may require rebuilding the pistons/rods new cams, etc.

now the I6 4.0 might be a good way to go, to save weight and have similar power numbers.

there are some (crazy) people who've tried turbo charging the v12s. google around, you'll find some builds.

but i think ajv8 has dimensions that wouldn't fit into the xjs' tight engine compartment.

anyway, good luck with whatever your plans are!

also, a manual box would be a great upgrade to any of these cars.

We got more in common than just the make, I know all about the V12 pain, haha. What year is yours? I'm guessing 84+ if you've got the trip computer. If I'm doing straight highway, I can get a touch over 20.
