As my posting history suggests, I've been eyeing a new Mk7 GTI for quite some time. Last week when I was in the dealership, I learned the Performance Pack will be available in Canada when I intend to order next year, with the 19" wheels stock (as above). Even though the 19s look amazing, I'm not looking forward to the compromises they make (ride quality, performance and tire replacement cost come to mind) and am wondering if I can get them swapped with the normal 18s from the factory. If not, I may have to buy a set secondhand, but I'd love to avoid that hassle.
Is this something mfgs do or would I have to go through the dealership?

If replacing the tires is a huge cost for you, you probably shouldnt buy a new car (love the new gti though). To answer your question, I doubt they let you switch down so I think you'll need to go the second hand route.

I agree with you, the ever-growing wheel diameters (but not widths) on new cars are getting out of hand.
I doubt you'd be able to do the 18s from the manufacturer. You could see if the dealer would do the swap for you, otherwise if not you could buy 18s from the dealer and sell the 19s yourself.

Well, i'm in a similar situation. I want winter wheels and tires for my WRX. The cost for 17" tires is very close to 16" steel wheels and tires. I would prefer the 16" so I dont have to have some1 swap tires and I can keep the stock rims in better condition but I've been told the 16s won't fit over the front brakes. My advice would be take the 19's, and sell them and then go get aftermarkets that you want. You might even get a couple bucks back for your wallet. Just make sure you won;t have any problems first like brake fitment or whatever.

Funny you should mention brake fitment because I actually have the same issue already with my winters. I bought 16" wheels for my current Golf so I can use them with a normal GTI but the PP has still larger brake discs so there's a 17" minimum, which means I'll have to do wheel swaps twice. The dealer has mentioned we may be able to work out a winter tire deal but it could be interesting to try a deal for both sets.

Disregard comfort, acquire 19's and style.

I'll trade my 18" Austins for your 19" Santiagos when you get your car haha.

I've had parts swapped at the dealer as a condition for buying the car in the past. Some will play ball, others won't. Had wheels, tires, and even an entire interior swapped (wanted a Mazda 6 wagon 5MT but wanted leather...none existed in the country. They wanted that car off the lot so bad they swapped the fabric interior from an auto sedan they had on the lot plus sourced the back seat and a few other pieces from an auto wagon 300 miles away...all at no cost). Also one time I got a free set of all seasons when I asked them to swap them out for summers they had on a different car. Turned out that it was easier for them to just mount a set of new summers and give me the all seasons rather than recode the other car in their system or something like that.
You can just take the stuff you don't want and try to sell it...but that's a pain and a gamble.

see if you could swap them with another car on the lot if they work in the winters. it will be a nice selling point for the other car too. win-win

I vote for keep the 19s, and get a set of 17s or 18s with snow tires for winter.
