Motor Trend Mexico/Autos Terra had the opportunity to drive the 2016 Mazda 2 in Japan. Its important to note this was a pre-production model. Fitted with both a 1.5 Litre Diesel and 1.3 Litre Skyactiv engines with either 6 Speed manual or automatic. I am going to translate it for you and modify it so it makes more sense. And no, I am not taking credit of this piece, this was all copied from Motor Trend Motor Trend. Enjoy!

Mazda has a lot to play with his brand new 2016 Mazda2 So it's not unusual to see such a redesign. With new SKYACTIV technologies that abound chassis, powertrains, body and suspension, the completely redesigned Mazda2 is very handsome. It has four trim levels, improved materials, quality and refinement that could make European and Korean rivals take note of the changes. But not everything is honey and flakes, because there are some issues in handling and maneuverability.

With the arrival of the Mazda2 2016, the Hiroshima-based automaker has finally solidified four models with SKYACTIV technology; the new Mazda2 joins the CX-5, Mazda3 and Mazda6. The outgoing Mazda2 won the award for World Car of the Year in 2008, so the new model has much to say. And from our brief test with a pre-production model and Japanese specifications, our first impression is stellar for a hatch that has to hit the horns of the Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Yaris, and upcoming Hyundai i20.

The fourth model using SKYACTIV technology is completely new inside and out. Slightly larger on all sides, the 2016 Mazda2 is 16 centimeters longer to reach 4.06 meters long, 2.5 high for a total of 1.49 meters centimeters, while its wheelbase stretches 7.8 inches to 2.57 meters. Its width remains unchanged. Considering that the new Mazda2 is a bigger and with added technologies, the weight gain of 40 kilos (from 989.73 to 1029.65 kilos) (Around 89 Pounds) is more than acceptable.

The new measures provide more headroom and legroom, as well as improved visibility with a larger windscreen and pillars that change 3.9 inches forward.

Wearing the new design language "Kodo"the Mazda2 has a similar grille and flowing lines that look like the Mazda3 and Mazda6. However, we could argue that the contours and angles of the Mazda2 offer the best example of the new Mazda design philosophy so far. In short, the Mazda2 is a very handsome car.

Feeding the Mazda2 there is a choice of two engines: A Skyactiv 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine or a 1.3-liter Skyactiv gas engine. Producing 103 hp at 4,000 rpm and 162 lb-ft between 1,400 and 3,200 rpm, the 1.5-liter diesel will be the main engine for Europe. Since many automakers are bringing diesel engines to our country, its likely to see this option in our market (Mexican). The 1.5-liter engine offers a not so good response from the 1,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm.

While the 6-speed manual transmission is well suited for the 1.5L diesel engine, surprisingly the new 6-speed automatic transmission works very well also, especially at low revs.

The 1.3L gas variant produces 91 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 89 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm, and comes with the option of five-speed manual transmission (yes, a five-speed) or six-speed automatic .

On the road, the Mazda2 starts where we left the Mazda3 and Mazda6. Atumu Doi, chief engineer for the Mazda2, said the rear torsion beam improves ride comfort. In addition, the lead angle is 1.7 degrees relaxed to improve straight-line stability. Mazda says the combination with the wheelbase for improved braking and cornering traction. However, we note that the Mazda2 still delivers as much sway as its predecessor.

The roughness was prevalent at low speeds as the car struggled to absorb bumps and cracks in the road. Mazda tells us that small adjustments will be made in the production model to improve ride quality.

Doi said that one of the main priorities of their team is to find the best driving position to improve driver comfort. The pedals were moved an inch to the right for more precise operation. The foot space in the Mazda2 may be used by those with a shoe size number 10, meanwhile the front seats have more support in the back and drivers can now fit measuring up 1.92 meters (6 Foot 3).

With four different combinations of trim, the interior is a much nicer place to be. We do not know what versions they arrive in our country, there is the option of leather wrapped seats, taking the design in a direction that Mazda has never been before. Security teams have improved significantly as well. These include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, radar cruise control, heads-up display, and rear cross traffic alert. We'll have to wait and see if these options are available in our country.

Mazda has put much effort in improving driving dynamics, levels of design and quality of the Mazda2 to be a strong competitor. With a completely new and stylish look, new engines, sporty handling and better equipment levels, Mazda is in the same field as its competitors.

This article also refers to what we would get in Mexico, and probably doesn't match the US's specifications.

The good thing about a torsion beam is that you can just bolt a metal pipe to it and it instantly acts like a stiffer sway bar. The effect on handling is immense. The downside, however, is that the rear end will hate speed bumps now.

That depends on your priorities. This car can be a serious track day toy, or last generation a least. This one seems to be much more luxurious.
