Today, I'm doing one that I have honestly never worn before, the Balthus knot. Also known as the "why is that knot so big" knot, it's the largest knot I've ever worn. Its basically a quadruple windsor + a dose of steroids. It uses a lot of fabric, and it turns out huge, symmetrical, very wide, triangular, and imposing. I won't hide my feelings—- I don't like this knot. Let me tell you why: Firstly, who looks at a double windsor and thinks, "Nice, but I wish it was twice as big!"? Secondly, like I said this knot uses a ton of fabric, so it's pretty much impossible for a tall person, even with a long tie. That leaves short people (like me), who will be absolutely dwarfed by the size of the knot. So I don't really know who it's for. In any case, it's roughly the size of Texas, so be bold and try it out!
( Note- I tied this one incredibly tight, to make it as small as possible, because I do have to wear it all day in my office. Even so, it's big. Tied looser, it's gargantuan.)
Balthus:
Advantages: When you absolutely positively must have the biggest knot in the room, you can loosen the tie a little and use it like a table that is attached to your neck, you can take the tie off altogether and use it like a silken mace/flail to fend off intruders
Disadvantages: Nobody needs a knot this big, looks funny on the only people that can wear it (short people), a novelty knot if ever there was one, your tie knot will get searched in airport security because it's actually large enough to smuggle things in

if I cannot tie a windsor at all, how am I gonna do that?
Also how much fabric did you use here? Is there even any tie left?

Heh, I need help to tie a tie at all, and then I just loosen it to take it off and hope that it never comes undone.

There's enough to make it look like the knot is sticking its tongue out at you.

lol, I'm 5'8" and I have about...1-2 inches of tail left. The tie is the proper length, to my belt buckle. I could make it maybe 1 inch longer. And this is a pretty long tie.

This screams for a 3-piece suit.

one of our account managers here can't tie one. He said he used one for 2 whole years (probably 50+ meetings and travel) before his mom stopped over one day and did the "doo do do Im a mom thing" and unpacked his suitcase and untied it for him. Now he wears polo shirts. He is such a dumbass

Oh I have one or two special knots that basically have to be worn with vests or at least jackets. I'll do them next week.

Meh. You could prob make it work with a long tie. Although, I don't know why you would. Like I said, not a favorite of mine.

oh yeah, but if I ever go swinging and want to insinuate something by having the largest, um, tie knot in the room, this has me covered

This seems like one of the ties retired NFL players wear on ESPN. They are hidden behind a desk, so length doesn't matter as much. They could also afford bespoke ties made to a ridiculous length [Drake's is the only place that I know that will do it over the intrawebz]. But yeah, not even going to consider this know. I'm 6' 5" and have trouble with a Windsor sometimes. Pretty much have to use ties that are couple years old or so that have relaxed.

One of our engineers went to mens warehouse, bought 30 ties, and had them tie them for him. They hang, tied, on the back of his door as a badge of honor (shame?). He loosens them and slips them off. If the knot ever gets loose or untied he just trashes them.
Some people.

now that is a waste of ties!

Also apparently is quite popular with Dr. Lecter. Though he may just be using a Windsor with a tie that has a massive interlining. I have a Robert Talbot that will give a knot like that with a Windsor. But mine doesn't have the same thick body to the knot, just the width, which makes me think Balthus.

Probably right.
