Worked on cleaning the 2.2 that's going into my saabaru as it was solid black from the oil leaks. I still haven't finished pulling the saabarus motor (trans bolts left). If anyone can recommend something to clean the motor (I tried engine degreaser, brake cleaner, and carb cleaner) that would be great. But for now I'm tired, so night.

if its painted, you either have to sand blast it or use paint stripper. neither of which are fun, easy or quick to do. you best off either leaving it black or spraying it another color right on top of the black

By black I mean it painted itself a couple of mm's thick of engine oil. Subarus do that...

Spray the thing with degreaser, rinse, and paint that thing an awesome color.

yea, its more like a gel. they also have foamy and regualr.

remember to let it sit for a bit, and let the gunk work its magic. then scrub it.

2.2 in a Saabaru? Those were the standard 2.5 weren't they?

2.0 turbo in the 05's which mine is. This is going to give it more "character" as it will be a hybrid build.

Elbow grease. those are all the things I would use to clean an engine, may just need to really scrub it down. What 2.2 are you putting in? The only two I ca think of are the one in the 90's Impreza's and the turbo from the 22b. I'm assuming the 22b motor because it would seem like a downgrade to go to the NA 2.2.

Mineral Spirits. I use it a lot. Get a parts cleaning brush to get into the recesses. A pan underneath makes clean up a lot easier.

ej22e. Ill be throwing my wrx cylinder heads on it and different pistons and rods too, it'll handle boost quite well. The blocks stronger then the ej20, and the .2 in displacement increase won't hurt either.

Get the gel degreaser and coat the fucker in it and let it sit for a long while. then brush it in with a stiff parts brush. then put more degreaser on it and let it sit some more and brush again then blast that grease off of it.

I just got done using some GUNK Gel Degreaser and it worked pretty well for me. Similar to what you described with the whole thing being caked black.

I was using a wire brush too, I'm going to try and get some heavy duty engine cleaner. That looks good though, my ej20 has a red color scheme too.
