90s-early 00s Japanese SUVs.
Like the 4Runner, Pathfinder, Passport, Rodeo, etc...
They aren't Blazer small, but they aren't Tahoe big. Most, if not all of them are really reliable. They all look good. It seems like they all could be had with a manual at one point.
I can't really fault any of them on anything.
It seems like most Passports and Rodeos, which are the same vehicle I've learned, have either been destroyed or rusted away. There's a severe lack of either compared to most other ones I've mentioned.
I might just have to start looking for a 4Runner or Pathfinder.

I had a 1998 and a 2008 4runner. Bulletproof.

The late 90s/early 2000s 4Runners and Pathfinders were amazing vehicles.

Im currently trying to buy a 95 Taco (Tacoma). Same thing as the 4 runner except it has a bed.

Dude, why did you try to cut me off today? Also, sweet Jesus decal you got in the van ;)
Oh, and I really really like that gen Pathfinder.
It looks DAMN COOL in black, with Guard.

I was thinking more along the lines of this Rodeo.

I never noticed how weird the back door(s) on a Trooper were though.

There's a couple decent Rodeos on eBay right now.
One for $1,600, one for $4,800 (one year newer and almost 60,000 less miles), or if you can do without 2 doors, there's an '02 Rodeo Sport (Amigo) for $5,000 that looks spotless.

I wish I had dutch doors on my Safari. So much cooler than the barn doors.
The Pathfinder is probably my favorite of all of them. Everything about it is just so right.

i really like the 1st gen Isuzu Troopers. there's one a few block over from my house, and it's squareness is just right. I see them around Denver area and they're always running well and in good shape. A good vehicle alright. GM v6's

Well, i like them too, especially in miniature shape:

I personally prefer the Trooper. Built like a tank, and damn near unstoppable in any conditions. You'll find the interior room to be much larger than the Rodeo as well.
Still, an Isuzu Rodeo is better than no Isuzu at all. Although I would look at an Axiom to, but you know about those.

It looks just perfect for thrashing it in dirt roads, but elegant enough to get it washed and be a great looking SUV.

Didn't know they used the 2.8 V6.

That's adorable.
It even has a little hood scoop!

So did my dad's Celebrity Eurosport and it popped a rod bolt at 96k miles.....and so did Fiero's and anything else using the 2.8 during that year.

The trooper just looks awkwardly tall in the greenhouse because of the huge windows. I'm sure visibility and head room are great though.
I was looking for an Axiom, but there's only one for sale that hasn't been crashed and it needs transmission work.

Headroom/visibility are great. Plus, things like mountain bikes slide right in the back. But yes, it does end up looking like the Popemobile.

2nded.

Yeah!
I also like their JDM Military SUV like Mega Cruiser.

i was lucky enough to ride around during high-school in my brother's pathfinder. that backseat saw a lot of action. it was a 93 i think... maybe 94. the one before the chrome bumpers. guess its not late 90's, but still an awesome car.

I had a rodeo of that vintage. A little older. Nice vehicles, though they were heavy

Drove across the country in a '98 4Runner with a stick. It's amazingly durable and great off road, but definitely on the more uncomfortable side.

As much as I like the Trooper, they were know for one huge thing:

...I think I'll stick to a Rodeo.

Also, stay away from the GM 2.8 in anything larger than an S10/Sonoma. It wasn't really a bad engine, but imagine something with a worse power/weight ratio than your van, that gets worse gas mileage.

You can also get the early 90's model with the 22RE and a stick. Not fast, but there weren't many SUV's from that time that were. Also, they are virtually indestructable. They have the fully boxed frame, instead of the half boxed from the pickup that was prone to snapping in half. Yeah, fully boxed, what was that in 2007 Ford about a fully boxed frame on a pickup?

Isuzu Amigo!

You're not the only one. I'd love an early passport. OR OR AN AMIGO!

No love for the early 2000's Mitsubishi Montero Sport?

I get it. I'm casually thinking a later 5-speed Pathfinder or 4Runner as the next daily runner. A Pathfinder is really just a tall, latter-day Datsun 510 wagon. Sort of. If you squint. And rationalize a lot.
