This !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of What Put the Muscle In Muscle Cars is an exhaustive look at exhaust (sorry I couldn't help myself). Mufflers and pipes, or the lack thereof, give muscle cars much of their distinctive sound.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
With muscle cars you want at least two sets of pipes and mufflers. Ideally, you'll want these to do a very poor job at actually dampening the noise coming from the engine, the muscle car is paradoxical like that. But then again, no sane person would want to stymie something as beautiful as:
Sometimes though, the exhaust system itself can be a showcase piece of a cars design AND a great way to ignite polyester pants:
Or it can be more subtle but just as cool and dangerous to the hotpants:
Note the cutout exhaust in front of the rear tire.
What's your favorit exhaust note of all time? Post a video in the comments below.

The lumpy burble of a cammed up Chevrolet immediately comes to mind.

WINNER!!! How are those factory pipes!?!

I'm in agreement. My favorite muscle car exhaust notes almost all come out the back of a Chevy.

Can't go wrong with any of the brands. Hard choice really.

Almost did this on the Montego. I gotta get my floor pans fixed up before I move to an adjustment like this though. Wanna make sure I don't have exhaust coming back in.
I LOVE this style though.
Also my favorite exhaust is my dual Flowmaster Super 44 set up on my 68 Montego of course... (If my link doesn't work correctly, fun starts around :43 seconds, original stock exhaust prior)

Yeah, there's no rule anywhere that says the exhaust has to make it all the way to the back of the car!

Hahaha true!
I remember in NJ though it had to come out behind the doors. No matter how many they were, it just had to be behind the doors (being behind the rear wheels was irrelevant).
Thankfully I'm in Michigan now where there's no rules about such things. Either way I think the pipes will be re-directed to side exit eventually. It was built into the Cyclone race cars that way and it would be fun to copy them

The factory could get away with a lot in the 60s. The funny thing is, the factory pipes that went to the back flowed better than the side pipes

All exhaust should come out the side in Michigan to help with snow banks:)

Never knew or would have expected that whatsoever.

big cam and glass packs equals awsomeness

Well mainly you don't have two 90 degree bends to push the exhaust through on the straight back. It offers less resistance.

It would certainly be more effective!

Cherry bombs or chambered powersticks turned backwards with side exits.
Thumpy, loud, and crackly. Also with side exits it echos across the landscape, which is nice.
Better sound character than straight pipes and louder than glasspacks turned the normal way.
12" glasspacks work the best.

Yep, my good friend growing up had a '68 camaro with a 350 with the same exact setup. Sounded like the world coming to an end.

It's what I got on my Cutlass.
It's what I tell everyone to put on their cars.

Also, sidepipe mufflers are terrible for flow. STS baffles are big for that reason.

Most of the stock exhaust systems all robbed a serious amount of power. On the '69 ZL1 I think the number was around 70hp.
And I'm just going to leave this here:

yeah, but man the sound those sidepipes make when a 427 is full song sends chills down spine and will make you check yourself
![]() 10/07/2014 at 12:46 |

Yeah, I put a set of side mounts on a tripower vette and it's brutal.

the factory sidepipes of a 66-67 corvette have a unique sound. My grandpa had a 67 427/435hp Vette for a short time when i was around 6-7. Took me for a ride and floored and I still hear those side pipes. It was the most amazing sound ever.
