Kinja'd!!!

As the title said, i found a Porsche 356A Spyder on sale just a few hours from my house. It's very rough, has rust everywhere, and not even runs. I've text the owner and offer him 1000 bucks, and he agrees.

Kinja'd!!!

The question is, if i'm going to restore a Classic, is 356A Spyder is a good start? or the Coupe, since i also found a silver Coupe for about the same price?

Kinja'd!!!

Both has the 1.6l flat-4, both is silver, and both comes with all the paperwork needed. I Don't know how much a 356 can bring, since i think there's only 2 356 in concours level in Indonesia (A White 356A Spyder and Green 356A Coupe). But i believe the 356 could past 200k easily.

And oh, lastly, NP?

Here's the Coupe btw, similarly rough and not even runs too.

What you're looking at is pretty much a glorified beetle IMO, I'd say it would be an interesting project to do.

But i believe the 356 could past 200k easily.

Only the specials (SC's, Speedsters, very early models, original extremely low-milage) are in the 200+K range. 1000$ for a bad 356 is a NP all day long though!

Yeah. Plus the girl agrees so that's a huge plus.

But i'm also considering other cars like Volvo P1800 (i also found it on the net at much better shape than the Porsche for less than 1k) and Honda TN360 (Concours level kei-truck for 4.5k, what could possibly go wrong?)

That price is Indonesian price.

Seriously, a Concours level W113 280SL could rack in 175k USD in Indonesia. Why the 356 can't?

So..
If you were me, will you get the coupe or speedster?

I think a concours 'normal' 356 should be in the price-range of a concours-level 280SL pagode. But that's still no 200k as you state yourself ;-) I know next-to-nothing about the indonesian market so you can tell me anything.

I thought we were talking about a coupé or cabriolet, not a Speedster? A Speedster is epic!

I have a personal preference for the coupe over the cabriolet but with equal prices of purchase the cabriolet could be the more financially sound project. For those prices shipping it to Europe could be even attractive. So if you're going to look at it take lots of pictures, check the body intenively and get back to us!

Well, i think it might be could then.

Oh yes, i mean the cabrio. I guess i'm a bit too excited about this project.

*I told the girl that this is a speedster tough to get her approval ;)

I think i'll look for it. I never seen an air-cooled porsche in my life.

either way, it should be awesome. If there's rust, be prepared to patch holes.

1K USD for this? NP. Thanks to scrap value laws here, I'd have to pay 500USD more... and my parents would kill me.

I'm leaning more towards the convertible myself, although I always sprung for the coupe in NFS: Porsche Unleashed... we're trying to flip a car here, not race it, right?

*"Why on earth you bought that useless junk aya!"

Yep. I guess i'll check both cars since they're not very far apart.

If the Coupé is really nearby you ppppplease check it out, I'll have it shipped to Europe if it's a solid body!

Not sure what a boattrip would cost me but I've always loved the 356-looks.

An air-cooled porsche is awesome. I own a '87 911 3.2. Best thing I ever bought.

check and see if either have original engine. In terms of rarity both are close enough it doesn't matter, I would be more interested in which had more usable parts left and matching engine etc.

Well, both have an engine, but both of them is non runner.

I kinda wonder what if i stuck a beetle engine to save cost, but that would be cruel. Let's hope i can get some parts from local porsche dealer.

A fully restored, numbers matching 356, will get you some good money. The problem, is getting there. I own an older, but still fairly common Porsche (944), and the prices for parts on it is pretty insane.

I couldn't imagine the prices for 356 parts. If you've got the mechanical ability to do so, I would say go for it.

Yeah, that's scares me the most. I'm afraid i can't recoup the monies that i spent on it.
*i'm willing to spent brand-new S500 monies on this thing, but i'm not really sure it's profitable.

If your end goal is to restore and sell it, then you will have to plan very carefully, do all of the work yourself, and use a lot of used/junkyard parts. I mean, for example on my 944, 1 motor mount costs 200 bucks, full clutch kit, 900. The list goes on. And as the years go by it becomes harder to find certain parts for these cars.

If you buy it, make sure you join a Porsche club, that will be your best bet to find quality parts at decent prices.

And that's where the problem kicks in.

I'm sort of perfectionists man that never happy of my own work, unless the factory that put them together. I guess at this point 280SL is a much better car for me to start with, since i know a thing or two about old merc.

But i'll check the porsche anyway.

but for value, the exact numbers matching original from the factory engine is very very important. If you want to get the best chance you need to ensure both have the original engine and if one doesn't pick the other r
