Back in August, my brother's Macbook stopped working, but he recently got it fixed it up by sending it to a local Apple store Genius Bar this past week, instead of following my suggestion of going to a shop I previously worked at, that were specialized as well.
He told me that all he needed was new motherboard, but the shop first charged him for a new hard drive, and contacted him over the phone after installing the HDD, and then did the new motherboard. He complained, and they responded with "We can keep it here until next week and put the original hard drive back in." Since this was his only computer, he ate the extra cost of the new HDD, which was not needed, since the laptop was perfectly fine and was only 3 years old.
So what they did, I'm guessing is either a bait/switch tactic, or worker incompetence. this sort of crap is everywhere, and my old bicycle fell victim to something similar as well, never again went to that shop, and I do my own bike repairs now.

That's what I love about small shops, to keep business they usually can't afford to fuck up. So better work for less money.

That shop I suggested was a small shop as well, and my family is well aware of them. I send people to them if I can't fix the issue. that is why I always go for the small, honest guy.

If it was under warranty, it is better that he took it to the Apple Store. The Logicboard is basically the whole computer. It costs $700 to replace, it would make more sense to get a new computer than to replace the logicboard out of warranty.

it wasn't in warranty, but the repair cost $550 for the board alone ($30 Labour), he decided to fix it instead of getting a new MBP, because it would cost less. He plans to sell it next year and buy a new one then.

So assuming its a base 13", He spent $1750 on a 3 year old computer that would have to be replaced in 3 years at most. Not the best longterm decision. But I guess if it worked for him in the moment, thats fine.

Not sure where you pulled the $1750 from, but he bought the thing new 3 years ago and had no issues until the graphics card blew.

a base 13" is 1200 new. 1200+550=1750. My rule with my DD macs (Not in my vintage collection) is that I'll fix anything that breaks except the logicboard. It's just not worth it financially. If my logicboard dies, in my mind it's time for a new computer

Ah, I see now, I had a work term at one point that most of time I refurbished macbooks, and a new logic board was a common fix, and that was it. most laptops that came in with water damage due to them being spilled on with coffee.

I have a story. My brother was given a (then) 2 month old 2010 white Macbook by his english teacher for free. She spilled coffee on it and it wouldnt work. By brother took it apart, Cleaned the video cable with isopropyl alcohol and did nothing else, put it back together and it was fixed. Nothing wrong with it since then, my mom uses it as a daily computer. He showed the guys at the apple store, and the basically guaranteed him a job when he turned 18, it also helped that the manager of said apple store was the husband of the teacher that gave him the computer. Here it is:
We're both very good with computers, its kind of a rivalry between us. We push eachother.
