How often should a person be changing spark plugs? Now that I think about it, I've got 220,000 km on my Civic, and have never changed them...

DAILY.

They can last about 100,000 miles or so. Which for you was 80,000 kms ago.

Yep... time to change them, methinks. I suppose it's possible that the previous owner did it, but given that I bought the car with 79,000 km on it, that's quite unlikely.

Go out there right now and change them. Ticking. Time. Bomb.

they're cheap ya stingy prick.
I change spark plugs yearly. That way they can't rust in place.

Take them out and check if they got carbon buildup. It's worth checking the sparkplugs when you change oil.
This diagram is also useful.

*insert generic answer here* basically go by your service schedule in your cars manual. I made the mistake and bought the wrong plugs and changed them too early, and I got rpm drops and engine studders all over the place. But more than likely you needed to change them a while ago

Personally, I know this isn't going to be well received on here but, if the car is running fine and gas mileage and power seem to be near what I expect I don't mess with them. Way I see it bad plugs are pretty noticeable and they don't typically cause serious harm if neglected. I'm a tightwad though so maybe I'm just being stingier than most. I was ok with a 30,000 mile oil change interval at one point.

I'd consider it. Strongly.

I just swapped original plugs on a 09 accord with 220k on it. Miles, that is. It ran noticeably smoother a and a reported few mpgs better.

Same, but my car is also nitrous fed a lot so I tend to kill plugs. Still it's a whole $20 to swap plugs on my car.

Get copper plugs and replace them every 3k miles when you change the oil! hehe at least that is what I do with my weekend car...
