If you're like me, carbureted engine noise is the only true engine noise. A sound sort of like potato potato potato potato ( that's my onomatopoeic word for carbureted engine noise). Part I was !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and part II, quite appropriately examines the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

When engineers stopped limiting themselves to just a measly 2 barrels in their carburetors, the rate at which gasoline could be dumped into an engine just got more outrageous every year.

Kinja'd!!!

Two barrels on the left and a four-barrel on the right.

Kinja'd!!!

7.4 liters + 4 barrel carburetor + cowl induction = 450+ horsepower

Kinja'd!!!

My first car had a 455 rocket V8. I wrecked it after 5 days of driving it. Took 2 years to get fixed....

Kinja'd!!!

Pictured above is a mustang 289 V8 that's been loved on by Carroll Shelby. 306 horsepower in 1965 out of a 289? Not bad at all.

Up next is how Chrysler did ram air induction in 1960, which was weird:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

And of course, there's the Dodge's 6-barrel carb on a 440 V8. Three 2-barrel carbs on an Edelbrock aluminum intake, atop a massive amount of cast-iron. Tasty. You can read more on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I want to know, are you a carb or EFI person?

I DD EFI, but my Camaro is Edelbrock carbureted. I did kind of wimp out and get an electric choke, though.

It's ok, you're in a judgement-free zone.

You didn't say though, what's your preference ?

Carbs. They're easy to rebuild and maintain and their cheap compared to replacing 8 injectors.

You don't have any bullshit electronic sensors to deal with and all you need is a brain to diagnose them.

Yeah, I'm helping Heaock Classic publish the archives of Collector Car Magazine, which went under a few years ago. None of it's ever been online. I'm only like .004% into the box of CDs they gave me full of photography. There will be loads of this stuff coming to Oppo for the next few years.

Depends. Carbs are ok and work fine, but on a daily I would run fuel injection. As far as performance both work wonderfully.

When it's a car that has to start when it's -20F I prefer EFI. When it's an old muscle/pony car then I think a carb is the way to go. I know that EFI makes them more drivable but I like the sound and feel of a carb on an old school V8.

Being 24, and only owning Toyota's I know EFI pretty well, and in the more modern (2000+) cars, it's pretty well done, fairly easy to diagnose if you have the experience. That being said, opening the hood (Or if there is no hood, just looking) and seeing a massive carb is pretty awesome, not much can visually compare in the EFI world unless you have some crazy turbo setup. Even then, seeing the carbs on a blower is awesome!

EFI all the way here! Never owned a car with a carb on it. Or even a distributor. Well, maybe thats a lie. One of my cars has a Gen II LT1, so optispark, so a digital distributor.

I learned at a pretty early age how efi works, what every sensor does and how they work. So Ive always felt very comfortable with it. Thats not say I dont know how a carb works. Im pretty familiar with their properties and principals of operation. People that ask me to explain to them how efi works. I always tell them to compare it to a carb. Idle, choke, power enrichment, vacuum references, etc. Both technicaly do the same thing.

Not trying to be a smart ass here but what does the method by which the fuel is delivered to the engine have to do with it's sound at idle? How is that not a product of the camshaft's profile?

Five seconds on YouTube will give you 8 million videos of fuel injected cars and bikes with lumpy idles.

Shouldn't be hard to find an example of a modern EFI engine sounding like the above video then, should it?

No, it wasn't. The yellow C6 at 1:09 has a really nice lumpy idle.

The weird idea behind the ram air is using a tuned, in other words specific, length of runners in the manifold. In general, longer is for torque, shorter is for power. Some manufacturers went with a manifold that had both short and long runners, so the induction could be swapped between them depending on what was needed from the motor at that point in time. This is similar to a the idea behind a dual plane manifold for carb fed motors.

I agree, carbed engines sound much more mechanical, more soulful. But in terms of reliability and consistency, they've got nothing on EFI.

How 'bout we compromise and agree that mechanical injection is the best?

Regardless of whether you like his exhaust system of choice, it has a lumpy idle.

A quick explanation of what creates that aggressive sound at idle: http://kennedysdynotune.com/big-cam-sound/
