I'm pretty sure the keyboard is dead, random keys not working and I have accepted that. But the thing is running super slow and is just having a hard time working well. I've deleted all the unneeded programs, virus scan came up clean. Windows Experience Index says the processor is running at a 2.4 out of 8. What do?

EDIT: This was left at my apartment by one of the old tenants ex-fiance. So there was clearly some reason why it was left.

Is it getting very warm? These compact netbook thingies often have overheating issues after a couple years, can cause problems with CPU speed and stuff.

ok, so its acrtually a decent one.
I;'m assuming when you say deleted all unneed programs, you mean uninstalled...
when was the last time you cleaned up the registry?

Surprisingly no. Its running no warmer than my laptop. I can download a core temp reader to find out though.

formatting the hard drive and installing a fresh windows/Linux/Ubuntu will work wonders. And check msconfig and see what's running at startup. Could be useless stuff there too.

Uninstalled, yup.

And the guy that left it at my place seemed to have wiped it pretty clean actually. No documents, downloads folder empty, browser history cleared. But I havent done a full registry clean.

Hmm, maybe it's just slow because of bad specs, it's probably only designed for light web browsing and stuff.

Since there is nothing of yours on the computer, I would just do a clean reinstall of windows. Let it format the drive a wipe everything. You may need to reinstall some drivers.

You may be able turn it into a little htpc. If you can hook it up to your tv, install something like xbmc.

Restart into safe mode with networking, see if the keyboard works then. Then remove any unneeded programs.

I've reached an interesting point here. Some of the non-working keys include the arrow keys. Any tips?

"Windows Experience Index says the processor is running at a 2.4 out of 8. What do?"

Is there any reason to think it should be running any faster than that? As I understand it, WEI is telling you there that the processor isn't really fast enough to run W7 - 2.4/8 needed, rather than 2.4/8 possible performance from that chip.

It is a tiny little machine, and its got an Intel Atom so its not super strong. But its struggling to run even 7 Starter. Not even full windows 7. But then again, I never saw this thing run new, so I'm not sure how fast it ran then.

Well, if WEI gives it 2.4, and that's the appropriate rating - which sounds about right - that would be why it's slow. Have you at least turned off all the visual effects?

open up cmd prompt and run "chkdsk /r"

Sometimes failing HDD 's will cause slowness. That command checks the hard drive for faults. Follow the prompts after doing that command. You usually have to run it upon reboot

You can also try in cmd to run "sfc /scannow"

This checks system files to make sure they are good

Everyone else has good advice. Wouldn't hurt to try a memory test too. Stuff like that comes to mind. I can give you more info if needed

my netbook gets a lower spec, and it puts up with Win 7 Home Premium. and those Atoms are very slow. I have a Z520 in it running at 1.33 GHz. Best part is that they only use 3W of power.
