DOD failure?

It doesnt feel or sound like it. Engine will not idle, stalls very quickly.
Im really hoping for a broken rocker or pushrod. There doesnt appear to be metal in the oil, so Im hoping its basic top end and I can do the rockers or rods and be done. If its a valve spring, Im screwed because that will require a full rebuild.

What are common failures on those motors?

weak valve spings under boost. Im not under boost.
Otherwise Im not really sure, honestly, these motors dont fail often. Both tow truck drivers said they almost never tow them.
Still, lifters, pushrods and springs are of main concern. A valve could be involved as well.
Car stopped running correctly, wouldnt idle, and makes a ticking/clicking noise before stalling. Almost immediately. It was too noisy to hear if it was the fuel pump when I pulled over.
Im 160 miles away from it in the SL600 now. Ill deal woth the rest of it when I get home. Im supposed to be having a good vacation.

Yeah that's my conclusion as well. Pretty damn reliable. Like the 5.3 in GM trucks, nothing major really goes wrong with them. I had one in my shop once with the same symptoms you describe. Pulled the valve cover and a valve was stuck on the guide. Not sure what happened after that. The lady decided to get rid of it.
