To get everyone up to speed, I announced that my little brother is getting his first car, he's set on a late 2000's mitsubishi lancer with cvt. That announcement was probably about a month ago. Anyway, the lancer he wanted sold a few hours before he arrived (he didn't bother calling ahead) and he called off the search for a few weeks. Now he has a different lancer in his sights, a black 2009 with a cvt and 85k on the odometer. He is going try to see it today. He also tried to contact the dealer, but didn't get a response back (then again, he barely checks his email, and usually doesn't call numbers he doesn't know back). He is hoping to get "$600, $800, maybe even $1000" off using in person haggling, which I think is silly. I also sent an email to the internet manager with an offer, so I'm waiting to hear back from him. So there's the update that pretty much nobody was asking for.

Is there a reason he's so set on a lancer?

I have no idea why he's so set on lancers only, I guess he likes the looks.

sigh... haha
I feel like that is one of the lesser of choices in that range. Also, I hate the CVT (full disclosure- my brother has a CVT in his car).

I have an unfair advantage, I have actually been in Stef's Lancer, and wrenched on it.

So... $6000 is his budget just abouts? The possibilities!

Why does he want a CVT? The Lancer is fine and still one of the best looking cars in it's class, but why CVT? Serious question, by the way, I'm curious what someone might like about it.

I think it's the only automatic transmission option on the lancer.

While that is a really nice VW. unfortunately he doesn't drive stick, and his mother wants to have a relatively safe modern car. (and the actual budget is around 10k)

That makes sense. If I could go back, I'd tell myself to get a manual for my first car, but I was no more interested in that back then than your brother probably is now.
I remember reading comparisons between the Lancer and all the other budget compacts where it would consistently get last or second-to-last place. My thought every time was "doesn't matter, looks awesome." They were so ahead of the times with that design. Look at the front ends of the new WRX/STI, the new Mustang, they look just like the Lancer!
Good luck with the search.
