My cousins Ford C-max is giving him all sorts of problems, and he is looking for something else. I already tried to push him in the Renault Avangtime, Opel Zafira OPC and the Volvo Xc90. Renault is a problem-car, zafira's are hooned to death and the volvo is way too heavy.
He is looking for:
- Equal size or bigger than his C-max
- Budget max 7000, he can get 5000 for his car.
- Reliable
- 2000+
- It must not be heavy (so around the weight of his C-max)
He is looking at a Mazda 5, but I want him to drive something more fun than that. He likes cars and has a small Fiat oldtimer.

The Mazda 5 might be his best bet out of your list. What makes you say its a less fun car?
I'm no expert on European cars, but I'll blindly suggest a Skoda Roomster and the SEAT Altea, if those are options he's considering, I haven't checked price, and I'm assuming you're asking for the price in Euros. EDIT: why not a Mitsubishi Outlander?
Also, I have a feeling reliability in general is subjective.

The mazda 5 is thought of as a decent driving car isn't it?

A previous gen C4 Picasso or a Renault Scénic, both in 5-seaters configuration. They are roughly the same size of the Cmax, and are some of the best small MPV out there.
I've driven a C4 Picasso a few years back, this thing really is a blast to drive. In France we find them around 6000€ depending on mileage and year. The 1.6 HDI is a proven, reliable engine (be sure to get a 110hp though). My father is on his 10th company car with this engine (in 90hp configuration), and he never had any issues with them.
If you want something more powerful, go for the 2.0l HDI (136hp), I don't know about the reliability though.

Have you driven the Mazda5? It's built on the same platform as the Mazda3, basicly a mazda3 in a boxier configuration. You can get it in a manual.

Audi for hoonage? I have no idea what the Euro market is like so this is the best idea I could come up with a a dumb redneck American. Seems to fit your cousins bill... I think
