I recall that when Ford bought Volvo they hoped to use their safety expertise throughout the organisation. Shows what happened when they sold them again...

Ford took a lot from Volvo.... it doesn't show here. at all. This Lincoln is a complete disaster

That A pillar should not bend like that.

Bear in mind though that this small overlap test is something that wasn't required by legislation anywhere and hasn't been factored into car makers design processes. If it had all three would have got a "good" score. I've heard car makers complaining that as soon as they design to get a five star result in all the various tests they have to do around the world (some of them not compatible with one another) someone comes up with some other obscure variation of the "car into solid obstacle" theme that can be tested.

Just make every surface on the car a huge crumple zone that can withstand an impact with a solid object from any angle. How hard can it be??

Just make something like a Citroen Cactus with really, really big Airbumps on every available surface.

In answer to your question, very.

Surprised me as well. The car looks so solid but it is obviously not. And all this at only 45MPH

The way the A pillar buckled is the worst, you'd think a larger modern car would do better than that.

This cars was designed and introduced before this test existed. The results don't surprise me.

Lincoln's steeringwheel airbag looked pretty useless. But I didn't see too much difference between the BMW and Infinity. Why did BMW get a marginal rating? Neither car had the A pillar bend much, though I am very impressed with the windshield not even fully shattering int he Infinity.

BMW looked fine with me. Maybe it was something in the force calculations. That Lincoln airbag decided to abandon ship on impact moving to the passenger side of the car. Maybe because the fame gave out.

We should buy die-cast cars and do drop tests. Upload them on our YouTube channel

YES!! Instead of IIHS, IIDS: International Institute for Diecast Safety. I can drop them from my 3rd floor and see what happens. I need multiple cameras though....

Niiice!! We can do a common off the table drop "most common scenario" Then do more uncommon heights :]

I can see it all now.

You thought you could get five star scores, did you? We'll fix that. Next time we're going to flip the car on its roof, rotate it 164° and slide it at 46km/h into a slightly deformable obstacle positioned at an angle of 19° from the number we first thought of. Let's see you design your way out of that!

Haha Start small, I like it. I suppose a full-on three story drop onto a concrete driveway would be an uncommon final test. I've actually been thinking about making a car look like it's been in a wreck, either fire or crash, so this would be a "natural" way of making dents...
