This car is personally one of my favorite cars ever. I've been spending all day at school day dreaming about it. In 68' this was Dodge's compact car and this looked like all of the other dart GT's and GTS's with 340s and 383s but this one is special. Its the GSS, the GSS is basically the greatest sleepers ever. It was the only way to get the big block 440 under the hood of the compact car.
This got me thinking, whats the best sleeper to come from the factory ? I'm not talking about the guy who stuck a 2-Jz in his 240 wagon I'm talking a car that rolled out of the factory like that.

We know its potential...but most people just see a boring wagon.

Obvious answer is obvious.

GNX.

Technically, it was only made as a test-bed for the XJ220, but the factory did make it.

late 90s Volvo V70R
Looks like a boring Volvo wagon. Yet it has 250 hp, AWD, and a manual transmission (available). This thing is so quick yet you'd never know by looking at it.

86-87 Turbo Regal. Same drive train as a GN/GNX, but available is lots of colors, vinyl roof, even a hood ornament. 0-60 in 5.4 seconds, 13's in the quarter.

Chevy has made a few good ones
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:10 |

There are a lot of good candidates for that title, I'm a huge Chevy guy so ill list a couple I think could be considered. I'm going to exclude the original ZL-1 and COPO cars because those were technically true production cars since they were built using a different system than other cars.
1966 Chevy II L79- this little car was a hemi killer. With its light weight and 327ci/350hp motor and a 4 speed this thing was a rocket.
1967-1968 Camaro L30/M20 combo. These were true sleepers because very few people knew about then when they were new. When you checked the boxes for a 327/275hp motor and the M20 4 speed you got a car that was just a tenth slower than a ss 350 car but was not wildly badged or pronounced and with a tune could be very fast.
1970 Monte Carlo SS 454. Two very small badges gave any clue that grandma had a big block.
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:11 |

I'd go a step further and say this, because 300hp.

Subaru Legacy GT, a lot of them don't have any GT badges, only a dual exhaust
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:12 |

1991 was a good year for sleepers
Dodge Spirit R/T
and also Syclone/Typhoon brothers
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:16 |

This isn't the ultimate sleeper, but still kind crazy. the 20th anniversary edition Trans Am. It had a Twin Turbo engine that produced 300 hp and went 0-60 in the mid 4's. It was quicker than the 'vette that year which is why I say it is more of a sleeper. GM downgraded all the figures on paper to make the 'Vette faster. On paper the Vette had 255 and this had 250

200-ish HP, AWD in a boring looking sedan.
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:18 |

I agree with both of these I was soooo close to buying a S60R sedan. I think the newer 300 hp inline 5 is better.
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:19 |
|
Of course but at the same time it screams AMG but they did squeeze all that crazy power into a wagon so I'll let it slide as a sleeper
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:21 |
|
I think this is defiantly one of the best sleepers They are so fast but hardly anyone knew how fast they really were. Only thing that puts is on the line is the shelby badges but its till one of the fastest hot hatches ever.

Was the V70R 5psd ever available in the USA?

W220 S65 AMG. Not just saying this because I own one, hear me out. 485,000 W220's were built during it's 7 year lifespan, and during those years and the years following, they were a dime a dozen here in NYC. Now that the W221 is a dime a dozen here, it even looks dated. To the average person, it definitely doesn't look like a fast car— visually there's not much separating it from the standard S class. However, it's faster in the quarter mile than the original Gallardos and I can personally attest to it being faster than a 458 on a highway speed roll-on. It has the same amount of torque as the 458 and F430 combined .
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:40 |
|
Definitely the Syclone. Laying any unsuspecting 944 low using a S-10/Jimmy is always the pinnacle of "U mad bro."
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:40 |
|
I like it but I doubt you'll ever see it on the road...
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:41 |

Sleeper kinda-ish, its really just faster than the rest
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:41 |
|
Oh yeah I forgot about those GMC trucks turbo v-6 AWD super fast
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:42 |
|
The old lady's race car good choice
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:43 |
|
But if you did, would suspect it to be so fast(assuming you didn't know what it was)?
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:43 |
|
I agree with all of those and I'll second the cover on the COPO cars but they are deff in the ranks for one of the best sleepers
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:44 |
|
Anyone else realize the Ford Flex with the 3.5 Twin Turbo Ecoboost V6 and AWD can do a sub 6 second 0-60?
No?
365 HP 355 Torque. It's a Taurus SHO in box form. Yeah, you weren't expecting THAT were you?
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:45 |
|
They look like sleepers but how and why they were built was pretty obvious what it was built for even then because they only went to the high performance dealers.
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:46 |
|
944's, 348's, whatever!
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:46 |

Most of the AMG cars are pretty decent sleepers with stupid power
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:48 |
|
What about the baldwin motion cars? would that be a sleeper ?
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:49 |
|
I kind of think of it as a regular mustang or Camaro being faster than the C7 vette.
![]() 01/28/2014 at 14:54 |
|
Now we are getting into the blurred lines between dealer specials and factory production.
As far as Baldwin motions-no because Baldwin was the dealer while motion was a speed shop. Their cars were never COPO cars they were always a transplant car because Motion would do more speed parts. Their cars were very obvious.
Now cars from Berger, Dana, or Nickey Chevrolet could be more sleeper but still stuck out due to different hoods and being full of speed parts.
Yenkos are the closest to pure stock because his cars were just COPOs with decals and nicer wheels.

I know but I just love the boxy look of this one so much more!

'62 Pontiac Catalina
A small number of 1962 Catalinas and other Pontiacs were built with a 421 cu in (6.9 l) Super Duty V8 with two four-barrel carburetors and 405 hp (302 kW), as a US$2,250 option (when the base Catalina listed at US$2,725) along with various "over the counter" performance options offered by Pontiac including aluminum bumpers and even lighter frames with drilled holes (which were dubbed the "Swiss Cheese" frames).

It actually had a slightly updated version of the 86-87 Grand National engine. 3.8 Buick with a single garrett turbo.

I know, but I prefer the boxylook on the one I posted so much more!
Engine swap??
![]() 01/28/2014 at 15:16 |

As much as I do love the idea of the 454 SS I just wish it actually had balls. 7.5-1 compression in a 454 making 230 hp but 385 lbft isn't all that impressive. It could have been insane with less EPA restriction!

The 1966 Ford Galaxie 7 Litre with the 4 speed.

That truck had potential but that was the lamest 454 in the world and the Chevy SS is a sleeper its kinda the Murican M5
![]() 01/28/2014 at 15:40 |
|
Now that's an answer I was hoping I would get those things are total sleepers nobody understands that they are pointlessly fast for an SUV/wagon kinda thing
![]() 01/28/2014 at 15:44 |

See I figured I'd ask because I know mopar's alot better than my GM stuff but I've seen the baldwin cars a few times and I think they are sweet
![]() 01/28/2014 at 15:45 |

Deff a good one in 1962 this was unheard of
![]() 01/28/2014 at 15:54 |

They are very sweet cars they are some of the wildest Chevys built in the heyday of the muscle car wars. Yenkos are the gold standard to Chevy dealer cars like Mr Norm is to mopars.

Hahahahahaha. I was thinking...what's just weird enough for this.... FLEX ECOBOOST.
Yeah, its the exact same thing as a Taurus in ...well literally a box.
If you can get past the weird styling how do jalops not love this car? It's AWD, Twin turbo V6, and I think it even comes in brown!

It does drive on the road apparantly.

Its making me want one again and I thought I was past this situation!
I almost posted my DD. 07 Milan V6. For a pretty standard midsizer from 7 years ago it does like 6.7 or so to 60. Surprisingly sporty.

Here is 2 the new TL SH-AWD Manual can do 0-60 in 5.2 sec with 307 hp
and Trailblazer SS o-60 5.4

Here's a "kinda I remember this is a fact but I have no citation and I'm too lazy to research it" sort of thing:
The Spirit R/T was the fastest sedan sold in America (probably in 0-60 and/or quarter mile times) in the 1991 model year, in a field that included the BMW M3 .
![]() 01/28/2014 at 21:38 |
|
"Sold in 1991 and 1992, the Spirit R/T had a quarter-mile time of 14.5 seconds at 97 mph and a top speed of 141 mph, making it the quickest four-door sedan sold in the United States (the fastest
mass-produced
four-door sedan in the world. Two cars sold only in Europe might have been faster: the handmade BMW E34 M5 and Alpina B10, selling for the equivalent of $59,905 and $109,500, respectively."

Best sleeper is the '03 Subaru Forester 2.5XT. Turbo flat 4 went 0-60 mph in 5.3s, and 1/4 mile ET was 13.8@97. WOW!!!
![]() 01/29/2014 at 19:53 |

Actually that's a good one I didn't even think of that, that's s197 mustang territory
![]() 01/29/2014 at 20:12 |

Here's another that surprised me. In '06 the Toyota RAV4 got the 269HP V-6 for 0-60 in 6.4s. By 2011 it was running the 1/4 mile in 14.9@92.9 mph!
