What are the best sounding engines ever built - production, racing, modified, I don't care!
I have 2 choices that I am torn between...
Entry 1: 1966 Honda Rc149 - a 125cc 2-stroke inline 5-cylinder with a redline of 20,000... built in 1966. These things made monster power for their size, but had no power spread - this required an insane 8-speed gear box to make it anywhere close to rideable.
Entry 2: Mazda 787B - Rotary goodness, no introduction needed.
Also- the NSR500 makes me drool.

To go with the 787b, another 4 rotor —
Also, 20v 4age -

Also I probably restore some hope in the world, I'm a 22 year old who knows that N/A engines sound best :)

For the love of good, the first one sounds like a god damn angry panther that got its nuts trapped inside of a steel bear trap. beautiful. Not the animal cruelty I mean, I mean the sound. It sounds angry.

Can't believe I left the Carrera GT out! I was saw my first one in the wild this summer (red with montana plates in CT near limerock?). I tried to keep up with the guy through some mountain roads just so I could keep hearing that sound. The downshifts to overtake traffic have me grinning ear to ear :)

A buddy of mine has some limited edition that was black/gold with a ton of carbon on it!

Here is an motorcycle that I like a lot. I'm indian, and this is a motorcycle that is popular in india so yeah. 350cc or pure classic motorcycle goodness. The indian army has used this motorcycle for 50+ years. Really is a great motorcycle. Not the best sound, but one of the best for its size. This video does it no justice though.

Here's a better example of how awesome the F355 sounds:

Ferrari V12 F1 car. I had the immense pleasure of hearing it live over the weekend for 3 days.

That is awesome. I have always been partial to the V10's - love the sound of this Williams!

The guy acts like a d-bag, but the soundtrack is spectacular.
Alan Moffat's Trans Am Mustang. Nuff said.
Mclaren Can Am racecar. Again, nuff said.

I was very lucky to get essentially the most trackside seat you can get, i.e hanging over the track on a steel platform. The only catch is that I had to wave flags at people all day long...

Personally, I think this is an absolutely glorious noise coming from the 2.8 liter Hartley (hayabusa based) V8 in this Opel (I think... and if so, I would like to know model):

I am all too familiar with those 302's - my dad has an original '68 Z/28 (MO block, essentially same as the DZ 302 aside from the 4-bolt main) with a M-22 "rock crusher" transmission and 4:10 gears. Such a fun car to drive. (also, LOL at the guys spouting off about the "Winchester manifold"... that is a stock intake, cast by Winters Foundry haha)
Very nice choices tho. I love the classic Trans-Am stuff. I know there is a dyno video out there of a Traco Engineering 302 with a cross-ram, but I can't find it now! From what I remember it pumped out 450ish HP around 7500rpm. Crazy stuff.

Not saying there aren't many spectacular engine sounds out there (should find a good Harley V-twin soundtrack cause mine in full-song is awesome) but there is nothing like a good old fashion push-rod V8 for sound.
But that 302 in the Z/28 wasn't a 302. It was a built 427 small-block.

I like straight eights. Some of them rev really high. Alfa Romeo's F1 race cars from season '51 (Alfetta 159) had 425 bhp (317 kW) @ 9300 rpm. The engine was 1,479 cc (90.3 cu in) and had twin-stage supercharger.
There are some videos from those cars but I'm quite sure that they haven't been driven in anger since 50's.
