It's science. And while modern science has brought us some pretty cool lights, like those on the new Cherokee, all the most beautiful cars use simple, circular headlights. Take for example this Cobra. The design is timeless, the car is iconic and revered.
Take a look at this BMW 507. This may be the sexiest car BMW ever made. It has circular headlights. As does this 250 GTO
Here's a few more.
Feel free to add your own.

But circular headlights were a requirement of cars in that era, that's like saying all the best Zeppelins were from the 30's. Well of course they were.

Yes, new Astons are very good looking, one of the few, but also, look at all the old Astons and their beautifully circular head lights.

You've opened up a whole can of worms if you're including the projectors and lams themselves and not just the housing. Nearly every car is included by your logic.

First car I ever drove was my dad's Mk1 Rabbit (not sure the year, either '82 or '83). It had square headlights, and at the time, I didn't like the round headlights. I thought they looked goofy. Age and wisdom have taken over, and I have come to appreciate the round headlights. Still like the square, but the round are somehow more iconic.

I will allow this!

While I don't completely agree:
I do think that forcing the designers to use standard headlights forces some creativity out of them. It's tricky to design around something you have no control over, but it's also freeing because it's one part you don't have to change.
![]() 01/16/2014 at 15:18 |
|
True.

It's funny because I actually like the Mk1's square headlights better than their single rounds despite being a huge round headlight guy myself. They don't look bad, but they just don't look as good.
But the Mk2, I'm a bigger fan of the round headlights, particularly the double rounds. They give it a ton more character.
So basically what I'm saying here is that the GTI did headlights best in Mk1 and 2 era. I'd love to have a Mk1 Rabbit (GTI a big plus) and would consider one as my next car (still looking!) with either headlight set - I'm not that picky...
Did your dad ever pass down the Rabbit to you?
Back in the day you prolly didn't think anything of it, but now I bet you'd think it's a sweet car to have :P
Maybe if we had more tiny hatches in this country the Mk1 would be easy to forget about, but alas I can never forget it now.

No, he didn't pass it on. I did drive the hell out of it, though. It was a 4-speed, and while it wasn't exactly high performance, it was a blast to drive. I've been driving a stick ever since (I've got an '01 Golf 5-speed now with 190k miles on it). I don't remember exactly what happened to that Mk1. He probably traded it in for something boring. When I went to grad school in 1989, I got an '88 Fox wagon (well, my dad paid for it and I paid him back over time—with interest). I put 175k miles on that, eventually replacing it with the 'o1 Golf. The Fox ended its life somewhere in Central or South America after I donated it to charity. The interior had gone to hell, but it still ran and the AC still blew cold. There was a strong design relationship between the Mk1 Rabbit and the Golf, especially at the front. I loved the two door wagon/hatch design. I wish you could get something like that today.

Two/Three-door hatches are definitely at a shortage now.
My dad's got a habit of buying his dad's cars and it's not uncommon to keep cars in the family so that's why I figured maybe you kept the Rabbit. Me personally, I would never buy my parents' cars because they're boring pieces of shit.
If they had a manual Mk1 on the other hand...

Good call!
Don't think of the S1 as much to be honest...
It's not as realistic as the S2 (considering it's not available in the US) and it's not as absurd as the S3.
I have no doubt the S1's are still amazing cars... It started the look that defined every other Elise and Exige. Although these were well under 2000 lb o_O

Judging by what I see in this thread, it almost feels like this should be revised to say "the best cars have sealed beam headlights."
![]() 01/16/2014 at 22:51 |

But even most of those cars with square headlights also have round headlights (F40, Countach, pre-facelift Diablo) inside their popups
![]() 01/16/2014 at 23:23 |

Because projector type circular headlights look awkward...
![]() 01/17/2014 at 10:58 |

Countach yes, F40 and Diablo no, and actually 288 GTO yes (although the only pic I could find showing this is of a model not a real car).
