I ran a battery test with an app called iBackupBot and it confirmed my suspicions that my iPhone 5's original battery was shot. It lost HALF of it's capacity in a little over a year! I would get less than two hours of usage on a charge. Luckily a new one went in today.
Anyone else here "wrench" on their own devices? (computers, phones, tablets etc?)

All the time. Took apart my son's baby monitor this evening to fix a broken power switch and installed a new overhead light in my dining room this afternoon.

Isn't there warranty for stuff like this...?

My phone is out of warranty by 4 months, and I voided the warranty when I changed my housing to an orange one.
Besides, at this out of warranty standpoint Apple would charge me 75 bucks to replace a battery which only cost me 10 bucks online. I like doing my own work. Apple's warranty is only useful when it's something they will replace the whole device for and you are within the 1 year warranty mark or have AppleCare+ (still charge you for a replacement device regardless).

I replaced the speaker on my wife's phone. I was proud. Work was 10% soldering and 90% origami.

Yeah I'm all for doing it myself after warranty as well.

Absolutely yes. Whether it's cars, computers, electronics, firearms; I find that process of Doing It Yourself is as much fun as the end result.

I wrench on everything.
Except for phones. Shit is too small.

I actually started on phones and computers and moved to cars. Each present their own unique challenges.

This is very true.

What phone? What a shame the designers made the speaker replaceable only by soldering.. usually they use connectors!

Nexus S - it just had two terminals, no connector

I replaced the USB PCB, (which was bent out of shape slightly, it could still charge) for my old phone, since it is unibody, taking it apart was a pain.

EDIT: Kinja is very hungry today.

I "wrench" on other people's electronics. I can't believe some of the simple issues people bring things in for. Suppose it's like folks who can't even put air in the tires.

Amazing right? I also buy old iPhones from people, later to resell them at a great profit.

No comment. Except I said that in a comment. Paradox detected. Self destruct sequence initiated. Repair bill incoming in 3... 2... 1... $$$$
