When I was a lad, Car and Driver was the magazine for me. DED, LJK, Pat Bedard with cryptolibertarian rants, unabashed hatred of Joan Claybrook... good times. They were also quite risque, and one photo of a lovely lady showing her appreciation for a race by lifting her top is still burned into my long-term memory. I learned SO MUCH.
But the greatest thing they ever did, in my opinion, other than keeping PJ O'Rourke employed, was a feature on a sleeper Volvo wagon they tricked out. I've used all of my (not inconsiderable, he said immodestly) Google mojo to find the story, and I've struck out.
Anyone else remember this? I believe it was a black 240 wagon with round headlamps, not the rectangulars. I wonder whatever happened to that car...

Is this it?
I started with C/D right about when they made the next Boss Wagon, the MB diesel. I wanted to be Bedard when I grew up.

LOL. My Google-fu is strong.
As I noted, I entered the C/D world when they created the MB wagon for DED. I recalled they dubbed it the Boss Wagon (at the time I didn't know it was the fourth such creation), so I figured that unique label could help with the search. I started with a Google search of "Car and Driver boss wagon volvo," which turned up a tiny PDF that showed each of the iterations over the years. Then I think I searched "boss wagon iii" and the link I posted turned up. I think there may be at least one follow-up article because the first blurb I found referenced a wicked turbo conversion, but that is not part of the article I found and linked. Happy reading!
