Weird cylinder counts?

I know there are 3 cylinder, and 5 cylinder engines. However, I don't think I have ever heard of a 7, 9, or 11 cylinder engine put into production for road use. Any of you guys know of any?

Nope, but the alpha twin air engine is 2 cylinders I believe.

that is interesting, I have never heard of these engines. Crazy how they re use old 3 cylinder and 4 cylinder heads

Just google agco sisu 7-cylinder diesel engine. And I'd like to argue that the W8/12 and 16 from VW is rather weird as well..

An 11-cylinder would be hilarious.

Well, I don't really need a 12-cylinder, but a 10 isn't quite enough. And 8 is right out.

With the exception of the Sisu (which from the wikipedia article didn't look too desirable), you can't really have a 7 cylinder engine in a car. This is because 7 does not go into 360 equally. So you would have crazy balance problems and such that would only get worse with RPM (which you need in a car compared to say a 2 stroke stationary diesel application). That's the way I understand it anyway.

But then how come we don't have any 9 cylinder road cars? by your conclusion, 360 is divisable by 9, so it should makes sense that we have 9 cylinders, right?

The same reason we don't have any I8 road cars anymore (and hardly any I6s as well). The engines are too long. And you can't have a V9. There are 9 cylinder radial engines, however. Of course I'm no engineer, but that reasoning seems logical to me.

Not a production car, but there are a lot of planes with 7 and 9 cylinder radial engines.

I think there was a LeMons MR2 with a radial stuck in the back actually. Might have been a 5-cylinder one though.
