*UPDATE* Various screengrabs by myself and others seem to show a coupe, so we may be looking at a P1800 for 2014, or a new C70. The shoulder lines seem very P1800-esque.

Personally I disagree with the designer saying that the designs were "vanilla" and "not cutting-edge", they just weren't sold in enough numbers for folk to know what they were seeing. While the sideways T headlamps are neat, they don't seem very Volvo-y to me. Heck, Mercedes cribbed the S60's front end for its cars, which seems "cutting edge" to me:
Though the guy uses a macbook and iphone so I see his perception as a tad flawed already.

I fully agree.
What I'm personally dismayed about is that it seems the gas tank is still on the wrong damn side of the car (fourth screen grab).

The side looks like it may evoke the P1800's design:
