The speed limits in this country suck, it’s true. That’s why everyone complains about them. 65 is an absolutely useless speed if you want to get from one place to another. We need a speed limit of at least 80 mph if we’re to stop complaining, but that won’t address the real problem: we suck at driving on highways.

I don’t know if people maybe can’t read their speedometers or don’t know their right from left or never learned how the motherfucking highway system works , but there is something deeply, deeply depressing about the state of traffic on any given interstate. In case anyone reading this doesn’t know how highways work, let me tell you: stay to the right unless you’re trying to pass someone, or if there’s a merge coming up. And use your indicators. And don’t slow down to look at an accident or someone who got pulled over or that big animal you thought you saw over there—no, by the trees—no, those trees.

It’s that simple, I promise you. If you focus on driving and not on being as utterly retarded as possible, the highways will flow much more smoothly, there’ll be less accidents and traffic jams, and maybe the Feds will see how good a job we’re doing and decide to raise the speed limits. I bet that’s why Germans have it so good. They’re all secretly robots programmed with the software Google uses on its cars. They can drive at autobahn speeds accident-free.

On a serious note, though, the standard of driving in America needs to be raised. Our driving tests shouldn’t be ten minutes long and take place in a three-block radius in an empty neighborhood, they should be long enough to make sure the student really knows how to drive, and not be based on a set of criteria that doesn’t take into account the quality of driving. We can’t complain about the speed limits, because, really, it’s our fault.

Also (at least here in Ontario), I wouldn't feel safe driving at 125 (140-150 probably) kilometres an hour on our highways (although if I had better driving education I probably would). The road surface probably isn't good for it and there are probably a lot of vehicles which wouldn't be safe at those speeds. As well, tractor trailers here are limited to 105 kilometres an hour, I think, so the meshing of speed would be stupidly dangerous.

Personally, I don't think a lot people should be allowed to drive at our current highway speeds with the shit that's pulled on a daily basis.

The highways aren't designed for or safe enough to drive 90 everywhere.

Preaching to the choir around here.

We have all been screaming for tougher driver training, graduated licenses, annual retesting, mandatory road-worthiness checks, eliminating driver distractions, etc for ages.

It's all falling on deaf (not bought) ears.

That's there for the sake of everyone else. So that they can drive the fuck out of that hole as fast as possible.

I grew up in Austin. I've lived in many places in Texas, and have visited just about every corner of this state. My family came to this state in 1826 and fought in the Texas Revolution.

The one thing I've found is that this state isn't very Candy Ass-friendly. Do us all a favor and stay in whatever unicorn-laden land you're from.

Also, insulting the homes of others is more acceptable over at Gawker.

highways are, interstates aren't.
My parents, who grew up and have 30 years driving experience each in south Africa and southern Europe.
they can safely drive their Volkswagens at 100+ MPH speeds on a 1 lane each way highway from California to Washington state.
so yeah. Experience, MANDITORY LEARNING WITH A STICKSHIFT, and a law that says cell phone usage is punishable with jail time would really make the roads a better place

Some aren't, but the rural interstates in their original configuration were. My Dad was a highway engineer in the 50's and 60's and used to tell me how much shorter trips were going to be because they were designing those roads for a 110 mph cruising speed. Bear in mind that that was with the suspension and steering of cars of that era.
