Fuck the school system. I'm a great student (do homework and such) and I'm failing my Calc class, while a known drug dealer/user (he's not that smart- don't use your own product!) in the same class is doing significantly better.

I dropped out of college for a reason.

Maybe the teacher is a customer of his?

Certain people are just good at some classes and others aren't.
I always hate those people that do well in math without even trying. Because I suck at math, even when I study the crap out of it.

So...he did better on the tests? He has great class participation?

Tests.

Yeah, same here. Is it bad I really want to become an engineer?

I come from a family of those, I am the second oldest, but apparently I am "retarded" or something. I am a senior in high school this year, but my younger siblings are already in more advanced classes than I am. Okay maybe I'm just average, but it kinda sucks, and my parents refuse to believe I won't be able to handle college. I said fuck it, all I wanna be is a diesel mechanic, but I can tell they are disappointed.
So yeah, screw smart people.

What lead bull said. I suck at math but I can make "A"s and "B"s easy in communication, english, and history classes. Everone's good at their own things.

With all due respect to your parents, they should count their fucking blessings and go to hell with being disappointed. An estranged friend I have had since grade school is a 35 year old unemplyed alcoholic who lives in his mom's basement along with his unemployed alcoholic girlfriend and their daughter. And your folks are disappointed to have an aspiring diesel mechanic in the family?

Well, if you can push through the math and still enjoy engineering, then don't let it stop you.

They mean well, but I can't wait to get out. For my junior year, they actually signed me up a program where I went to a community college and earned high school and college credit. They expected me to do it because my older sister did it. I could have graduated at 18 with my associates degree. I fucking lost it. I grew my hair out, sold my truck (doh), did some regrettable things with drugs and failed out of every single class. I wasn't trying to prove anything at the time, but I could not handle college, even of the community variety. I have crazy depression I am just now starting to get under control, too.
I have already been offered a job as a diesel tech by a few farmers I know, just gotta get CAT certification, then I'll make bank. I will probably start a machine shop after 4 - 7 years.

Finishing school is important because people (not just your parents) judge you by it. Sucks, but thems the facts of life. Sounds like you have a solid plan with the mechanic route.

I had a roommate in my freshman year of college who was into trying all sorts of drugs at night - some of his antics were amusing, but the rest annoyed me, particularly when he had friends over. His habits really knocked his sleeping schedule out of whack.
And yet, he's an aerospace engineering major who studies more and gets better grades than I did, along with generally being smarter than most people we know. On top of that, he balanced it all with band practice, working out, and going after internships.
I don't know if he did get an internship, but he did land a modeling gig after his parents' friend saw some of his Facebook pics and requested that he make a portfolio that eventually got approved.

Hey me again while my comment before was funny it was not terribly helpful. And I hate seeing good students struggle. Since its early in the year all hope is not lost, if you want to be an engineer you gotta master Calc. Maybe you don't suck at math, maybe the way it is taught isn't clicking with you. Can you go to the teacher after school or during lunch? How folks teach in a group and one-on-one is totally different. If you don't like the dude is there another Math teacher you can go to? Maybe a classmate? I know it's a hassle but you might not have to do the extra stuff all year just until you get a comfortable foundation.

I can already see that. Depending on what scholarships I get, I might get a degree so I could teach math at some point, but I'll be in some form of school for at least two years depending on what certifications I get, most likely Cummins and CAT at least. There's a big demand for truck drivers, mechanics, and farm mechanics where I'm located, it's all pretty rural/industrial. Teachers also get paid fairly well here from what I understand.

I was a substitute for 1 year while I figured out what I wanted to do.
