Related to what's in your picture, a Landy uses a "Railco bushing" for the top pin on a "swivel ball", and can have "Gaiters" for said "swivel ball"s installed.

Lots of BMW's too. Dampens some vibration I suppose. I think it also allows for a little play in the driveshaft to reduce stress on the related parts and seals.
