Yea. I can dig it. Those flux capacitors on the wheels will make it hard to park though.

Awesome, I like it. (FYI - My dad has the Sportlamps on his '70 Mach as well, so I'd consider them a '70 option carried over to '71.)

I thought being a Montego Man you might be curious about one of your car's Ford cousins! It has a 351 Cleveland, through a Toploader into a 9" rear. Very sweet car - it was in hibernation for many years and we're still in the process of getting it back on the road. I'm thinking it will be ready for next Spring.

Kinja'd!!!0

Fantastic. 351C is such a phenomenal motor. I have a 302 in my Montego, which as you should now is based off of a 351Windsor (not as cool). But it is the prototypical Ford 5.0 which makes it cool, and parts are EVERYWHERE for them. I can't imagine how nuts the Montego would have been with one of the big blocks in it, the 5.0 pulls pretty damn hard now that I upped it to a 4 Barrel Holley and a Edelbrock Performer RPM Aluminum Intake Manifold. Exhaust comes soon!

I havent posted anything on OPPO or Jalop that I've done in photoshop until today. And so far I've changed the headlights of a Ferrari 458, color shifted my Montego and added lights to a Mustang.

I've been busy in photoshop today...

Also, a friend of mine just told me I missed a HUGE opportunity to sneak in a watermarked troll face into that image. I am disappointed I didn't see that opportunity.

Kinja'd!!!0

I also have the 302, but yours being carb'd gets all the cool points! Mine has the Performer RPM 2 intake. I'd prefer mine to be carb, but have to say that it is enjoyable to just get in and drive whenever I want. Eventually, the plan is go to a 4 Weber IDF44 setup, but that's a level of dedication to tuning that I don't quite want to take on right now.

While the Windsor engines weren't quite the race-bred, huge breathing (at least in 1970), lung-filling monsters that the Cleveland heads are, I'm still a big fan. How many CFM are you flowing on the Holley? What are you thinking of for exhaust?

Kinja'd!!! MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner > Michael Delaney reaches down between his legs and eases the seat back
08/20/2013 at 15:39

Kinja'd!!!0

It's a very, very mild 4Brl Holley, at only about 390 CFM. Everything else in the motor is stock so more than that very well could have flooded the motor consistently.

I'm planning on dual Flowmaster Super 44's. My mechanic also recently offered me a set of long tube headers to go with it for and extra $50. Seems like a steal.

Should be a MONSTER sound roaring out of this thing when all that is hooked up. It currently has a stock single exhaust.

Got it - we're looking to upgrade the Mach's carb to something more modern, streetable but that won't choke the heads. Tons of opinions on the forums, but not a lot of solid science. I need to do a lot reading on carburetion.

Flowmasters sound like a good choice and the headers seem like a screaming deal as long as there are no leaks due to a bad flange or bad welds or something. The fact that it's from your mechanic should mean they're in good shape, I'd think.

I may just do 2 4bbl Holleys in a turkey pan. Like I said in the other post, I don't have enough carburetion knowledge yet.

08/20/2013 at 16:01

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah these guys have been working on my cars for years. Modern and classic cars.

As for a carb for the Mach the obvious choice is always a Holley 4160 for Ford V8's. Whether that's the BEST you can get I don't know. Edelbrock carb's are OK. Demon makes some cool stuff.

You'll find about 90% of old Ford V8's have a Holley 4160 on them though.

Mine lives in my Factory 5 - although I love me some Fox Body. TrickFlow does do a lot of nice work. Many of the FFR guys have TrickFlow stuff on their cars.

My plan is to slowly modify it backwards! I've gone to smaller wheels with fatter sidewalls; smaller brakes in conjunction, of course. Gauges will be changed next from Auto-Lite to Stewart-Warner, etc.

That's an interesting color combination that I've never seen before. Light blue with darker blue stripes and white side pipes. I like it tho!

No wonder you want to go backwards instead of forwards with the trick flow. 4 webers will in fact look phenominal on that car (if you can handle it). The dual 4 barrels is a good step in the getting used to tuning department. I think I'd take the Holleys or Demons over the Edelbrocks though, Edelbrock carbs have very easy tuning, and I don't think you'd get enough training out of it!

Kinja'd!!!0

I like it too - a little different than the classic wimbledon white over guardsman blue. I've seen cars with owners who say they are guardsman blue, but it's closer to mine than the Shelby American racers. So there are a couple different versions of guardsman blue - must have changed by model year or just strange paint codes over the years. The stripes are very close to the Acapulco Blue of my dad's car.

Speaking of going backwards, there's a very talented fiberglass guy who is active with the FFRs and a two guys are having him make 289FIA bodies. My eventual goal is a clone of CSX 2557 with the dual sidepipes (similar to the Daytona setup). 2557 is what triggered the white sidepipes for me (although mine are the FFR standard '65 4 into 4 style). Like the Webers though (also on 2557), it's a plan/wish, rather than anything concrete.

Sucks that it re-occurred. Did you change up gasket styles to try something different to maybe get a better seal or is that the plan this go-around?

Extra hands in garage are good. Especially little hands to get to the $#%^* clips holding the brake lines to the firewall!

08/23/2013 at 09:37

Kinja'd!!!0

Hahahaha yea they are helpful for that (mine were used for that when I was little).

But I definitely changed gasket style. These were the original gaskets from 1968 that were on it. I went with a rubber gasket so they'd be nice and reusable if I ever had to do valve work. I was warned by my dad to use 3M weather sealer instead of the edelbrock gaskacinch(sp?) I had. As usual, he was right (he's an ASE master tech for 25+ years). I was just being lazy and didn't want to go to the parts store.

Guess what I'm using this time?

Going with master tech/font of knowledge is probably a good call ;-)

When I was little and my dad couldn't get a nut or a bolt broken, I'd always volunteer to help. Obviously. Because 6 year old hand strength is massive.

08/26/2013 at 09:16

Definitely, 6 year old super strength.

Unfortunately it wasn't the gasket. I think the valve cover is damaged. I can't imagine that I screwed up the gasket AGAIN on the same side while the other side hasn't leaked at all 2 times in a row.

Kinja'd!!!0

That's a bummer. Were you able to make the car show or was Herb back in Aisle 7 before you got out of the garage?

Were they original covers? I always hate to lose original parts.

Kinja'd!!! MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner > Michael Delaney reaches down between his legs and eases the seat back
08/27/2013 at 09:36

Kinja'd!!!0

They are original and I did the same test drive loop I did last night. Got into it once or twice and pulled into the garage to see Herb was late to Aisle 7...huge mess...he might be fired.

The plan all along was to change out the originals for black with red lettering. The theme for the car is Red with Black detail outside and Black with Red detail inside (and under hood).

I keep all my original parts though. The 8,394,756,209,854 pound iron manifold is in the garage as well as the wimpy original 2 barrel motorcraft/holley carb. As well as the huge typical big blue air cleaner box that came with these generation, I have the Mercury Stickered blue air cleaner lid up on the wall in the garage actually.

The thought is if I ever had to/wanted to sell it at some point it's a huge possibility someone will want to return it to stock/original.

Kinja'd!!! Michael Delaney reaches down between his legs and eases the seat back > MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner
08/27/2013 at 10:23

Kinja'd!!!0

Sucks to be Herb - this is a tough economy.

Cool color scheme - was your block originally black or that light blue? I know the FFR guys that are obsessed with originality have mentioned that both colors were used, but I don't know off-hand which blocks get what color (or indeed if there is any particular rule). My dad's block is the light blue (as is mine, but since mine is "wrong" on ten other levels, it doesn't much matter there).

So you're saying you had one of the lightweight racing manifolds? That's probably worth some dosh ;-)

That's the plan - I like original, but happy to make things a little prettier while still keeping the old-time vibe. We search the web for parts and the originality crazies have driven some stuff to outrageous levels. One guy on e-bay wanted over $3000 for a rimblow wheel. We decided to restore ours, suffice to say.

Kinja'd!!!0

Hahahaha good choice on the wheel.

Yeah my dad is obssessive about originality. Example. When walking through a car show if he looks under your hood and sees the wrong hose clamps he writes off the car and walks away. Seriously. Hose clamps.

He cannot stand what I'm doing to my car lol. I'm trying to make a fun street rod cruiser, I'm not worried about it being 100% original. When I have the thousands to paint it in the future I'm at least keeping the body red to match the window sticker I have to display. If I didn't have the window sticker I probably would have made it black (like so many people have told me to do). I'm thinking Ford's new Sangria Red or Race Red. The Race Red doesn't have any metallic though so it tends to look a little flat in the sun light in my opinion.

The block is light blue as all Ford/Mercury's were in the late 60's (not sure about lincoln). I've never seen an original black 60's Ford block. Though it may give me justification to make mine black!!!!! I don't plan to make a huge departure with the car. The main changes I have planned are below:

Newer Ford red paint

Black with red detail valve covers and air cleaner

Black with red detail intake manifold.

Red Spark Plug wires

Black Headers

Ford Magnum 500 wheels with red/black Mercury center caps

Exterior wood trim painted black

Refreshed headliner

Black carpet

And now maybe a black engine block.....

Okay, looks like this was the official color list (source FFR forum post re: "Ford guide"):

1963-1965 Black

1966 - 1968 Medium Blue

1969 - Light Blue

Another guy (resident historian and chief originality maven) chimed in to say Cobra racing blocks were black, while the production cars were "Ford Corporate Blue" (what I was calling light blue).

Ahh so the late 60's was just whatever blue they chose. Interesting about the Black, I may be able to use this to sway my father's opinion of how I'm "destroying" my car lol. I do know the blue is original. It was completely stock when I got it and the valve covers even say "Powered by Ford" which is always good for a laugh from the uninitiated.

Like I told him, I want it to be a fun to drive, good looking car. It doesn't have to win a concourse or any car show for that matter. Just want it to be my vision.

Thanks about the mag 500s. Wanted to do this kind of combo (if only the center caps didn't cost $120!!! WTF?!) :

Those center caps are gorgeous! I know all about the crazy prices though. We got a set of AR Torque-Thrusts for Mach 1 (keeping the original deep dish steelies and wheels covers safe and sound, no worries). My dad went looking for center caps to replace/put over the AR logo and we were stunned. Trying to find some nice decals to do the job.

You're hardly destroying it - major lol on that one, especially if you keep the original stuff in reserve.

I wonder if the "Powered by Ford" is a holdover from the Cobras - the 351C in the Mach has it too. The 289 cobras were "Powered by Ford" - that was part of the deal. AC bodies, Shelby tweaking and "Powered by Ford" - that's how they were sold through Ford dealers. Even though mine is a 65 427 body, since I have the 302 (effectively a bored out 289), I believe in truth in advertising, so I have the original style "Powered by Ford" fender badges (no CI indication). [I wanted to upload a pic, but Kinja hates me.] The 427 fender badges said "427" but not the one on the 289s.

my dad's an extreme purist. It's a pain in the ass sometimes.

I'll be keeping the wheels/hubcaps when i ever get the cash to get those mag wheels and center caps, just like I keep everything.

I love that it says powered by ford. I plan to put on Ford Racing valve covers so it will keep the "Ford" under there. It's fun how they didn't try to fake it like they do now a days. Yeah the 289, 302 and 351W were all based off the same motor. Which is why you can put 351 heads on a 302 without issue. I'll have to check the reproduction 427 in my work's lobby and see what it says on the side. I think it just says "427".

I converted them from the iPotato to jpeg already, so the potato-ness is limited to a quality issue only!

Yikes. Maybe try hosting them somewhere like flickr or photobucket then you can direct link to them instead of uploading 1 by 1.
