XR= the lettering system Ford used for cars in those days
4= 4 cylinders
T= Turbocharged
i= Fuel injected (no inter-cooler in stock form)

XR was Ford of Europe's designation for the fastest version of whatever model. XR2 was a Fiesta, XR3 was an Escort, XR4 was a Sierra. ST would be the current equivalent. The RS versions were faster and rarer still.
