Monterey Week is a big deal for car aficionados of all types. Whether you're interesting in zillion dollar Bugattis, Mazda Laguna Seca racing and watching cars squirm through the Corkscrew, or you're jonesing for some LeMons, it's all going on this week on the West Coast. For those of us who cannot make it to California, it's a challenge to follow along and get a feeling for what it's like out there. One day I'd love to visit Pebble Beach, but not this year. So, VelocityTV, basically the only automotive dedicated channel in the US brings a touch of the week, but only through Mecum's auctions. Mecum tends towards a 1 dimensional hotrod oriented view of the automotive world. There's nothing wrong with it, but there is a lot more going on out there than just auctions.
This morning I turn on the TV and what do we have on Velocity? Chasing Classic Cars almost all day long. I love Wayne Carnini's show, but all day long?
On the cover of Discovery Commuincations 2012 Annual Report it boldly states: "Those who tell the stories rule the world - Hopi Proverb" Well, then tell us the story of Monterey. With 155 worldwide networks in 45 languages, serving 218 countries and territories, with 1.8 BILLION cumulative subscribers, I think it might just be worth the investment of a team of its big names covering Monterey either Live or near live. "Discovery’s revenue increased 8% to $4.487 billion, primarily driven by 13% growth at International Networks and 5% growth at U.S. networks." That means you and I have brought them this growth. We watch their programming and bring them advertising revenue. So why not strike out and be innovative and serve your viewers? We know the simple answer, but that doesn't answer the frustration at seeing a list of reruns on television.
I guess we'll have to rely on Travis, Matt, Mike and other Jalops and Oppos to feed us. And I am thankful for their work truly.

And that's exactly why I'm watching the Pebble Beach Concours live stream instead.

The one issue with streaming, I thought about this for a bit, is that I can't choose to TiVo it and watch it later. Plus, imagine the various hosts covering events, conducting interviews, it could be a boon for Discovery because it could be used globally, not just here in the US.

Find a free recording program for your computer, and some computers even have them built in. Download the streams that way in the background. Or, get a capture card. That's all TiVo is: a glorified tape recorder.
A quick google search shows up this exact thing: http://www.totalrecorder.com/background_rec…
That's probably on the pricey side (I guarantee there's a free software that does the same thing, somewhere on the internet) but it's a step in the right direction. It's a full-blown suite though, so you might be better off looking for a "stream downloader" instead.

Also, I suspect Wayne Carini may be a robot.

He is the least charming human being on the planet. That man has neither the face or personality to be on TV

Plus he dresses like my dad.
