THE star lot of the weekend. The 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider sells for a truly incredible hammer price of $25m!!!
From RM:
Ferraris are bought and sold internationally at staggering rates, but their perpetual desirability is attested to by the fact that the vast majority of important examples are not only known and accounted for, but that they are also well documented by historians and enthusiasts. This is especially true of the 350 275 GTB/4s and, more specifically, the 10 additional N.A.R.T. Spiders, which irrefutably signify a holy grail for collectors of road going Ferraris.
Add to that 10709’s exceptional purity, matching numbers, and, most importantly, the fact that it has been owned, cherished, and enjoyed in the same good home from the day it was picked up at the factory by its first owner; this is an owner who, much like the buyer of an FXX or 599 GTO, was personally asked by Ferrari whether he would like to buy such a car.

Nice car, CP.

And the seller got to unload his ugly, weird-shaped roadster and can now buy something better looking, like a 250 GT California!

Sorry but I like the Berlinetta more than the Spider: it seems someone chopped its roof regardless of the consecuences.
THIS is a nice spider:

the car's been sold for charity, mate. here's the story: http://www.petrolicious.com/this-ferrari-2…

At least the money went to charity!

With $25M, I think I can buy my top 50 cars and a giant garage to house them all.

For anyone wanting the backstory on this vehicle:

Crackpipe. I'm not saying this is an amazing beautiful car and worth a ton of cash. I just can't fathom paying $25 MILLION for a garage queen. $25 million... think of the things you can get for that. You'd could buy the La Ferrari, P1, and the 918. Oh, wait I still have $20 million. mmmmmm. Singer 911, McLaren F1 LM, 512 TR. oh wait I still have $15 million left over. I guess I could build a garage mahal, and a mansion attached to it. I should have enough to buy an Hungarian trophy wife. I'm out.

Great car. Glad to see the cash went to a worthy cause. Excellent!

Other than it being gorgeous and the seller donating the proceeds to charity, your post is right on point.

But if you already have your top 50 cars and a giant garage with more than enough room to house them all, would you go this price to make this #51?

I agree, the one-off "Nembo" Spyder is much better looking than the 275 NART Spyder. It's another example that the best looking Ferraris were not always built by Ferrari.

You're not supposed to smoke the Nice Price Crack Pipe, it's just for show!
![]() 08/18/2013 at 09:56 |

Gorgeous car, crack pipe price. I would have a massive garage of more plebeian Mustangs and whatnot for that amount of money, but it sure is pretty.
Edit: $250k would go to that nice 46 mile Tungsten Ford GT I saw on Mecum last night.

The guy who bought it already has those things.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 10:22 |

FYI $25,000,000 does NOT include the 10% buyer's premium, so this car actually sold for $27,500,000. Still only the 2nd highest price ever paid at auction, it was beat last month by a Mercedes W196 that went for $29.6 million. Still insane, and yet totally worth it!

There just so happens to be one in Palos Verdes, CA...

Also, I believe, according to the Petrolicous video on this car, all of the money from the sale is going to charity. Staggeringly generous.

No.

This is the exact problem with the world of Ferrari buying and selling bubble, little men with big wallets create price tags that are so far off, it causes anyone with a Ferrari to hold on tighter to them, sit them longer in their garages, and think their car is the next holy grail. No way is this car worth that. You're telling me this car is more special then a Alfa Romeo 2300 Mille Miglia vehicle ( Ralph Lauren's was last estimated between $15-20 million) one of 6 Daytona Cobra Coupes ( $10-15 million) Or any hand built Duesenberg, or pre war luxury vehicle ( with the exception of a few Bugatti's, but they too just barely surpass that price)
There's a reason when I go to Monterey, or Lime Rock, and Ferrari's out there are slime pickings, both on and off the track ( with the exception of Pebble) Personally, I'm disgusted at these prices, and these so called "collectors" should understand what their doing to the hobby is wrong, and is destroying the Ferrari community by doing this.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 11:12 |

Indeed! I was going to say that if the money goes to charity then the $25 million price is tainted, but unlike Barrett Jackson charity lots where the buyer's bid goes to charity and I'm fairly certain the buyer gets the corresponding tax deduction, this sounded more like the seller was going to donate the money paid to him. Long story short, I guess the $25 million is a real sales price and not inflated by the charity-donation angle.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 11:13 |
|
I am guessing this is the one from Petrolicious the family said they would finally sell? I hope we find out which charities the money goes to. And I hope the new buyer actually drives the car like the original family did.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 11:28 |

I agree that if I had 25M to spend in cars I wouldn't buy this, but think it like this, you already have all that and you have 500M-1B in the bank, so you could have the 25M sitting in the bank or have one of the most special cars in the world sitting in your garage.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 11:32 |

I think the guy who bought this already have everything and tons of money left to buy everything else and that ferrari will sell for more than 25 in a few years. Those guys never loose a dime.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 11:53 |

That's crazy money. Anything with Ferrari on it.... If you're a billionaire, sure why not.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 12:21 |

I love this car but CP. You can buy like, uh, 830 Mustang GTs for that price.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 12:23 |
|
Even in my crack addled fantasies, where I could afford something like that, I wouldn't. $25 million is the operating budget for a medium size company. I love the car, but that kind of money could be put to better use.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 12:24 |
|
I'd buy that for a dollar!

Was unaware of the charity element - that's wonderful! But as always, the appeal of cars varies according to taste. But as long as there are 250 Californias and 365 Spiders occupying the "hyper-expensive Italian roadster" category, this model will continue to remind me of an inverted, swollen banana. Beautiful interior, though.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 13:15 |

I'm willing to bet that the person who pays $25million for a vintage Ferrari already has all those things.
Probably several trophy wives and mistresses, as well.

I am a big Ferrari fan, but for some reason I have never found this body style as gorgeous as most people. I personally think the front end is too massive, the headlights too big, giving it a somewhat overweight look up front. It sort of reminds me of a Cal spyder that gained a bit too much weight. Sure it's pretty, but not Cal spyder pretty, or 25 million pretty.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 13:56 |

Well, the coupes aren't worth anywhere near this amount. The NARTs are special because Ferrari built them vs being outsourced, and they were raced. It's the history and heritage and in the case of this car, it's the one-ownership fact that really boosts its value. In my opinion that is.
![]() 08/18/2013 at 14:11 |
|
The prices you're referencing are ESTIMATES, which are often off by large margins (in either direction). No one really knows the value of anything until it's offered for sale/auction and someone actually buys it.

In my current financial state, I would have to say "fuck that noise, as glorious as it sounds." If I was a billionare, I wouldn't stop until I had filled my garage with the most beautiful cars I could think of. The old Ferrari 250 Lusso/275 GTB4 are on that list, and had I the scratch, I would not think twice.
I will have to settle on saving up for an E39 M5 and then a pre-73 long hood 911 in the meantime.
I will say, as someone who is passionate about cars, this is just more motivation to work my ass off.

Petrolicious did a fantastic video on this very car a few weeks ago and we had it pegged at 14 to 17 Million and the fact that it went for $25 is staggering and wonderful, because the bulk of the profits are going to charity. Great result, wonderful carl. http://www.petrolicious.com/this-ferrari-2…

And Fram oil filters.
![]() 08/19/2013 at 11:02 |

Considering the proceeds of this auction went to charity it probably sold for more than actual value.
![]() 08/19/2013 at 11:14 |

Fram oil filters aren't so great. I saw a video where a guy cuts a bunch o filters open for the sake of comparison. Frams were built shitty. I don't know how you can go to such lengths on a car but then throw on stuff from your local parts store. Couldn't they at least get them from an Italian local parts store if they couldn't find factory/NOS parts?
![]() 08/19/2013 at 11:24 |
|
I have no clue why people do things like that. Restore a 6 figure car, and put shitty aftermarket parts on it.
I love tuning into Barrett Jackson and Mecum auctions and watch high dollar muscle cars go across the block with Firestone Indy 500s or Primewell tires.
![]() 08/19/2013 at 11:30 |
|
Yea. If you're gunna restore a muscle car it needs some nice Wide Ovals, red lines, or Polyglas tires. It really makes a huge difference in the look.

Even BFG T/A's are acceptable, or some Eagle GT, if you wanna go the radial route.
![]() 08/19/2013 at 11:38 |
|
Nah. Everybody has those. They're overplayed. But they're ok only on sub 40k cars that get driven a lot. I still hate to see them though.
![]() 08/19/2013 at 11:45 |
|
When looking for tires for my truck in an odd 15" size, my choices were BFG's, Coopers, or Grand Am GT tires.
Could be a lack of choice in older sizes at normal tire stores, but there's still Coker tire for the real thing.

a BOSS sits here!
![]() 08/19/2013 at 11:53 |

And Coker tire for real money.
I've been having a hard time finding white walls in the size I need too. I wanted the larger size used on police Crown Victorias for my 92 Grand Marquis (was able to find them about 10 years ago in white wall). Since that size is now common on small trucks and SUVs, my choices were black wall and white letter. Black wall wouldn't look right and white letter would look too ethnic on a Grand Marquis. So I stuck with the normal civilian size.
Also picked up the original wheels and hubcaps for my 1972 Cutlass Supreme. I'm having a hard time finding white walls for that too, believe it or not.

I think a normal Mclaren F1 just went for 8m, so your statement may not be 100% valid.
![]() 08/19/2013 at 18:51 |

The only thing I can think of is that they used to be good back in the day and people think they are still good. However, I don't know if they were good back in the day either, so that could be wrong.
![]() 08/19/2013 at 21:57 |

A few news outlets on TV in my area keep reporting that this was the same car from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's annoying to me. Not only is it not the same model, but the one in the movie wasn't even a genuine Ferrari.
![]() 08/19/2013 at 23:54 |
|
Don't know about the OEM batteries on Ferraris, but I've seen people with excellent show Ferraris rocking the shitty FRAM oil filters, because there was a period where FRAM was a sponsor, and so FRAM was the correct to stock filter for these cars.
Which is terrible, because one of the worst bits about a FRAM is it's bad anti-drainback protection, which is something that's vital in an upside down installation like that.
Similarly the correct to stock airfilter for many Studebakers are the cheapest FRAMs with the orange tops.
![]() 08/20/2013 at 09:28 |
|
Those Legends are actually good batteries, I use them on a bunch of old slow starting diesels all winter. The fram filters do suck, esp in the upside down installation. Even a Napa Gold o/f has anti drainback valve in it. Should have kept it consistent if it is a driver
![]() 08/20/2013 at 11:56 |

Guess you didn't see the McLaren F1 sell for 8.74Million the night before, rework you numbers, you have no money left.
![]() 08/20/2013 at 12:42 |

I had a feeling the F1 would be more than "calculated", so I'll give up the trophy wife for bachelor living and down grade my mansion to a cottage. Life is full of hard choices for us 1%ers.
![]() 08/20/2013 at 19:08 |
|
Yeah, Napa Golds are great filters for the dollar, but when the judge is looking for orange, a black filter will get you docked points.
I'm not sure how that meshes with an obviously aftermarket battery like a the NAPA unit in the car though.
Napa batteries are better than, say, Walmart batteries, but I prefer Interstate.
![]() 08/21/2013 at 08:15 |
|
oh yeah no doubt, all depends on the eye of the beholder, be it judge or driver. I would imagine the original battery in there would have been unbranded, and certainly not maintenance free! Ah well who cares. As long as whoever bought it uses that battery once in a while and lets that sweet whip hit the streets once in a while he could have an Econo Power in there and I wouldn't care! Sadly probably not the case though

look in the mirror my friend and all becomes clear.
